Iley
« on: Tuesday 11 March 08 16:33 GMT (UK) »

Hi,

I have been going over some of my unsolved mysteries and have come up with a bit of a conundrum.

In 1783, Brompton by Northallerton, Matthew Iley married Mary Kendrew. I have no birth dates, or parents' names, for either of these two.

But the first child I have for them is a son, Matthew, baptised at Friary Yarm Catholic, High Worsall 17/12/1797.

There are further offspring, Peter, 1800, Martha 1804, and Francis 1806 but I can find no trace of any between the marriage date in 1783 and Matthew in 1797.

That seems like a huge empty gap to me and I am wondering whether I have made some fundamental error ( I'm not alone in this as there are several of us claiming and researching these ancestors).

What were the naming patterns for this area? Would a first son be named after his father or am I right that it would be the paternal grandfather whose name would be given to a first born son?

Can anyone find any offspring for this couple earlier than 1797?

I have Kendrew queries too but think they'd be best done separately.

I am very confused now.

Hi Jen,

I can't  help with your query but I would like to register a sideways interest in the Iley name. My own name is Mellanby and I have got back to about 1700 in the Teesside area.

I am writing from memory as I am not at home at present but around 1750 I have a couple of male Mellanbys who have Iley as their "middle" name but as for as I can tell the name is not derived from a woman whose surname was Iley. The only clue I have is that in the will of my ancestor Joseph Mellanby there is mention of John Iley (of Norton I think) who was a business contact and also an executor of the will.

I know this is not relevant to your present problem but I write out of interest.

It does seem odd.   Of course, baptism was not always at birth or soon after.  Some children were baptised much later.   It might be worth your putting a query on the upper dales fhs website.  They are based around Northallerton (part of Cleveland FHS) and as they are local they have a lot of in depth knowledge of the area and the records that exist.  They have an email query bit.

Hello again,

Thanks for both replies.

John - The Iley family was pretty large and there were many of them around the Stockton, Norton, Middlesbrough areas. I am not that far back with this line yet, Matthew in 1760ish being my earliest known ancestor but watch this space - if anything new crops up, I'll post it.

Andrea - Thanks for this and your reply on Kendrews. I use the Dales discussion group regularly ( read mail daily and post if there is anything to say) but most of my Dales families seem to be notable by their absence! I live in eternal hope of one of them turning up in some interesting and ancient item of scandalous nature. I almost wish my name was Peacock or Metcalfe because they are always in the Dales news, so to speak. I have obviously asked my questions on Ileys, Kendrews and more and have made some progress but even with their help I have reached a dead (ha!) end.
I have been to Northallerton and gone through quite a few records there but had no luck with earlier baptisms. I'm not sure whether the fact that those I have found were baptised in a catholic church makes any difference. I don't know how the law stood on this and when RC baptisms were permitted. Very rusty history knowledge on this, I'm sorry to admit.

Regards
