Hi,
I have been going over some of my unsolved mysteries and have come up with a bit of a conundrum.
In 1783, Brompton by Northallerton, Matthew Iley married Mary Kendrew. I have no birth dates, or parents' names, for either of these two.
But the first child I have for them is a son, Matthew, baptised at Friary Yarm Catholic, High Worsall 17/12/1797.
There are further offspring, Peter, 1800, Martha 1804, and Francis 1806 but I can find no trace of any between the marriage date in 1783 and Matthew in 1797.
That seems like a huge empty gap to me and I am wondering whether I have made some fundamental error ( I'm not alone in this as there are several of us claiming and researching these ancestors).
What were the naming patterns for this area? Would a first son be named after his father or am I right that it would be the paternal grandfather whose name would be given to a first born son?
Can anyone find any offspring for this couple earlier than 1797?
I have Kendrew queries too but think they'd be best done separately.
I am very confused now.
Jen
