Hi there, Can anyone have a look for the Baptism of Mary Ann Gilby (could be Marianne Gilbey or variants) circa 1862 / 1863. She was born in the Whetstone area so could come under Finchley / Barnet. Believed to be illegitimate from the marriage cert so real need is to identify her Mother if possible.
Many thanks,
Mike

Do the witnesses on marriage cert give any clues to family??
Do you have her on any census pre marriage?

Hi Suz,
Answers in reverse order:-
I have her in the 1881 census (Marriage was 1882) as a servant age 18, born Whetstone, Middx.
Whetstone is Barnet is Finchley i(s Barnet Registration district), although I cannot find Whetstone as such on the official list for Registration Districts.
I cannot find her in the 1871 at all.
1861 & 1871 census have only one family of Gilby's in Finchley (they originated in Buckland, Herts. ). Head was Joseph, wife was Elizabeth.
The witnesses at the marriage were Frederick Mole - husband of Ann Gilby, daughter of above family and Sarah Pettit, sister of the groom Arthur Pettit.
Both the Pettit's & Mole's came from Sandon in Herts. VERY close to Buckland where the Gilby's came from.
Joseph & Elizabeth Gilby did have a daughter Mary Ann born abt 1841 in Therfield Herts and she can also be found in the 1861 & 1871 census.
BMD gives no logical likely birth.
Hope that answers the questions, but please don't hesitate to ask if any more.
Regards
Mike

Certainly haven't discounted it, especially as the family seems to have originated in that area, but can't really rely on it either! All the other references say born Whetstone / Finchley so I just don't know.
Frustrating this game isn't it???
But now you brought it up I will see if I can find this one in marriage, death or other census. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that somebody decided that they were born in a totally differe4nt place would it?
Many thanks for the suggestion.
Mike

Hi Suz,
Well, I've dug into this a bit more and in fact the BMD (Mar '63) shows her as Mary Ann, there is no Marianne at all in the district (Royston) around that time.
So that is encouraging - BUT given the number and age of siblings it seems very doubtful that she was illegitimate.
Casting a very broad net in the 1881 though I found her as a servant in Brighton of all places! (RG11: 1077: 52: 34).
BMD has only one birth of an Ann* Gilby anywhere around that time so it must be the same!
Oh well, back to the drawing board as they say.
Thanks fo rthe ideas.
Regards,
Mike
