Anyone Know Shalbourn(e)?
« on: Tuesday 11 March 08 23:56 GMT (UK) »

I have just discovered an ancestor who ran an inn called the Red Lion in Shalbourn for a while (approx 1857 to the mid-1870s).  I have not been able to identify where this might have been as it seems to have long since closed.  Does anyone know anything of it?  I imagine it was quite small.

Thanks.

Hi Rachel

Link to Genuki page on Shalbourne
http://www.brazell.net/genuki/BRK/Shalbourne/index.html

Google says there is still a "Red Lion" in Shalbourne
The Red Lion Inn   - High Street, Avebury, Marlborough, SN8 1RF
http://www.city-visitor.com/shalbourne/pubs.html

But it also seems Shalbourne was 'shared'  between Wiltshire and Berkshire

ANd the Red Lion Inn of Avebury is officially in the Wilts side?
If this is the same Inn, pic of it here :

Thank you for the links, Ambly - some useful background there.  However, I think the Avebury "Red Lion" is too far from Shalbourne to be the same pub, despite what Google thinks!  The census returns for 1861 and 1871 make no mention of Avebury and give every indication that the inn was somewhere in the village (the addresses either side merely reading "[enumerators number] Shalbourn(e)" - whether on the Wilts or Berks side, I'm not sure!

I found only one on-line trade directory which mentions Shalbourne (dated mid-1850s).  It lists two pubs in the village - "The Plough" and the "Red Lion" (kept by it's previous owner a Mr Oliver).  "The Plough" is still operating today but I can find no other reference to the "Red Lion" or it's position. Undecided

There was  a Red Lion in Shalbourne, but is no longer in existence. It was converted to a home for motherless girls and is now a private house.

Further details sent by pm

Sorry to jump on the bandwagon but does anyone know where the Kings Arms in Shalbourne was? The NASH family were the licencees in the 1880s. Could it have been a re-named Red Lion? I would be really v pleased to know if anyone has the info to hand.

Thank you

Hi Nashua, have emailed you privately, I hope - I am never too sure whether I have carried out pc things correctly.  Thank you very much indeed, I really look forward to receiving a pic.
