I have just been told by my Mum & Auntie that their mum, my Grandmother pictured on the left, had a stillborn baby girl which they named Janet in about 1948 and they think that she had a graveyard burial. I have been looking for a birth registration and death notice but can't find any mention of her on Ancestry. I am presuming that if she had a proper burial then she must of been registered somewhere ??
Does anyone know when and if stillborn babies were in fact registered, here is what I know
Janet Burke
Born approx mid 1948 ( a daughter was born May1947 and a son Sept 1950)
Parents were John Burke & Lily Hutchings

My understanding is that only the parents (if living) can obtain a copy of the stillbirth entry. If they are dead then a sibling can apply for the certificate but will need to supply details of death of the parents.

It does look like there is no public register and I will have to get my mum to get the certificate as Janet would be my Aunt.

Stillborn children are not mentioned much. Before 1980's mother's were told to forget about these 'lost' children. It was & still is left to the families to pass on their memory.
My own eldest daughter would have been five this coming August. She was perfect & we miss her so much. I am making sure she will not be forgotten & include her in my tree. We also have a special day for her on her birthday. My other two children know she's in heaven.
My mother's first baby died within hours of her birth. She was taken away by hospital staff & as far as I'm aware she was buried in the hospital grounds. This was common practice up until the 1980's.
Going back another generation it was normal for the midwives to 'dispose' of the babies. My nan had a son & we have no idea what happened to him. In fact it was just rumour until I started work on the tree. I did find his record as he was born alive but didn't live. He wasn't buried in the family plot though & it goes without saying that he was born at home.
Burial records are the only ones where you may find baby Janet. It's lovely that she has been remembered.

I have only today located her burial and it is in a graveyard but I am not sure if she has a memorial stone but I do know that she is very near to her parents and grandparents, I am going to visit her soon.
I also think that after 60 years Janet is at last being remembered, as she only cropped up in a recent passing conversation and was the first time I had heard of her
