Isaac Breach - have I got the right father?
« on: Friday 14 March 08 10:56 GMT (UK) »

Hello,

A very kind person looked up a marriage for me, but it has created a brick wall instead of confirming who I thought was his father.

I have Isaac Breach born 1835 Berkshire.  He marries Elizabeth Sarah White in 1855 in Bedminster. On the certificate he says his father is PETER BREACH
– occ Banks Man? (she could not read it very clearly)

I thought his parents were Jeremiah Breach (1796 – 1864) & Amelia (nee Hawkins).  They also have a son Peter.

I cannot find any other Isaac Breach’s.  What are the chances of him putting his brothers name instead of his father’s at the time of his marriage?  It seems odd, especially as his father was still alive.  I have looked and looked but I cannot find a Peter Breach with a son Isaac.

Your thoughts most welcome.

Thanks
Joan

Hello Joan

Don't know if you have this already, but in the 1851 census there is Jeremiah & Amelia with Isaac and other children at the Ship Inn, Sonning - Jeremiah is a fisherman and barseller; Isaac is a fisherman.  Do you want the whole transcription?

Hi Gaie,

No thanks.  I had already found all the census records for Isaac with a father Jeremiah and mother Amelia.

The problem now seems to be that his father is not Jeremiah but Peter and I cannot find a Peter Breach with a son Isaac
Huh

Hi Joan - gotta say that the chap you have looks good to me thru to 1861 in Bedminster - ie age and PoB seem to work - occupation in 1861 seems a bit of a leap up - Accountant ?, altho 1871 seems to be Railway Clerk ?

I wonder if his brother Peter has confused the picture - who were the witnesses on the Marriage Cert ?

It looked like (this is how she wrote it)

Witness very unclear - Ed..?& Helen? Hemlett

I couldn't find them  Undecided

PS

On Isaac's marriage cert he is an accountant

Joan

Not sure if any of the following will help, but it's always interesting to potentially fill in some gaps!

from the Berkshire Burial Index:

Breach, Peter
17 March 1746/7 Reading, St Lawrence
10 November 1831 aged 76, Sonning
3 Feb 1833, aged 48, Sonning
23 September 1890 aged 69, Twyford St Mary

Breach, Isaac
9 August 1773, Hurst, St Nicholas
1 June, 1852, aged 39. Wokingham, All Saints

Breach, Jeremiah
21 April 1861, aged 76 Easthampstead, St Michael & Mary Magdalen

There a quite a number of Breaches listed, maybe 100, so these may or may not be related to your branch of the family.  But the Sonning burials look likely don't they?

The trouble is, if Isaac was born in 1835 (do we know that for sure?) it's hard to see how he could be the son of either Peter who died in 1831 or Peter who died in early 1833. Huh

HI Anna,

Precisely  Grin

His age was shown correct on his marriage certificate and it also confirms this on most later census records.  I'm sure he is Jeremiah's son.  If his father couldn't get to the wedding and his brother (Peter) stood in for him.  Could he have put his brother's name instead of his father. Huh

My husband's  Great grandmother put her grandfathers name on her marriage certificate even though both her grandfather and father were dead.  We can only assume it was because he had the better occupation "Police Man" rather than packing case maker which was her father's job. Grin

it may well be along those lines - maybe Isaac didnt want his new missus to know that his Dad ran a Beerhouse ?

A Banks-man tho isnt particularly up the social scale - its either a mining job or maybe to do with railway navvy work ?

I couldnt make out Peters occupation in 1861, or find him in 1871 ....
