I have hit a brick wall and would be most grateful for any suggestions. I have James Thomas (or just Thomas) Reece born 1838-39, bricklayer, born in Sevenoaks, Kent on the 1891 census in Bradford and same name, birthdate and birthplace on the 1881 census in Openshaw. Four children confirmed: Hannah Elizabeth, Ada Maria, Beatrice and Thomas James. I was unable to locate births or baptisms for the children under the Reece surname (after sending off for about 10 certs). Luckily had a brainwave and located all four children with correct names, birthdates and birth order under the surname Screece with father listed in all four cases as James Thomas Screece, bricklayer/maker and mother Maria Lane. Birth cert of son Thomas James in 1876 registered at Audenshaw, father James Thomas Screece and mother Maria Lane. Birth cert of eldest daughter in 1871 was registered at Manchester with father James Thomas Screece and mother Maria Lane. I located James Thomas Screece and his wife Maria on the 1871 census living in Cheetham and his birthdate is still 1838/39 but birthplace listed as Plympton, Devon. Occupation still bricksetter. Marriage cert lists yet another change in surname although it is very hard to read properly- looks like James Thomas Pethick (or Pethicton?) Sercee (or Sercer?) and Maria Lane with James Thomas again born in 1838/39 and working as bricksetter. Marr registered in West Derby in August 1868.
No Screece/Sercer/Sercee/Screese/Creese/Crease/Reece/Reese/Rees/Reis/Pethick/Pethicton or other variants can locate James Thomas prior to 1868. I have also tried isolating what seems to be the only facts that are consistent i.e. his first and middle names, occupation and birthdate and checking findmypast, freebmd.ancestry and igi for all births in that period and earlier census in Sevenoaks and Plympton for similar characteristics. I have no proof that he was even actually born anywhere but Lancashire although the middle name from his marr cert suggests Devon/Cornwall and his wife Maria Lane was herself from Devon.
I would be most appreciative of any other suggestions regarding how I might try and trace him further.

Hi Joanna
Do you have James and Maria's fathers names on their marirage certificate? To help with finding them in the earlier years?

Hi there,
Sorry, yes- Unfortunately, James gives his father's name as James Thomas Pethick (?) Sercee (?), bricklayer- that is- the exact same name and occupation as himself so I surmised from this that he was illegitimate and did not know his father. Curiouser and curiouser. I have found Maria Lane (his wife) on earlier census- her father was William Lane, shipbuilder and she grew up in Kingsbridge and her family originated in Dodbrooke. Cannot find any earlier connection with James Thomas in this county, though.
Thanks for your help! Joanna

James gives his father's name as James Thomas Pethick (?) Sercee (?), bricklayer-
Was afraid you were going to say that! 1841 census has a James Crees, b 1936 in the Plympton St Mary Workhouse in Devon - also listed is Caroline Crees, age 45. Its a very poor image, but best I have found so far. But if this year of birth is right, he won't be on the bmds at all http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?PlymptonStMary/PlymptonStMary.shtml link to Plympton St Mary workhouse here

Thanks for the thought, Jinks. It was actually mistranscribed as Patrick but I have confirmed that it is Pethick and found them on an earlier census.
Cheers! Joanna
