COMPLETED- Surname change- Brick wall
« on: Wednesday 12 March 08 18:25 GMT (UK) »

I have hit a brick wall and would be most grateful for any suggestions. I have James Thomas (or just Thomas) Reece born 1838-39, bricklayer, born in Sevenoaks, Kent on the 1891 census in Bradford  and same name, birthdate and birthplace on the 1881 census in Openshaw. Four children confirmed: Hannah Elizabeth, Ada Maria, Beatrice and Thomas James. I was unable to locate births or baptisms for the children under the Reece surname (after sending off for about 10 certs). Luckily had a brainwave and located all four children with correct names, birthdates and birth order under the surname Screece with father listed in all four cases as James Thomas Screece, bricklayer/maker and mother Maria Lane. Birth cert of son Thomas James in 1876 registered at Audenshaw, father James Thomas Screece and mother Maria Lane. Birth cert of eldest daughter in 1871 was registered at Manchester with father James Thomas Screece and mother Maria Lane. I located James Thomas Screece and his wife Maria on the 1871 census living in Cheetham and his birthdate is still 1838/39 but birthplace listed as Plympton, Devon. Occupation still bricksetter. Marriage cert lists yet another change in surname although it is very hard to read properly- looks like James Thomas Pethick (or Pethicton?) Sercee (or Sercer?) and Maria Lane with James Thomas again born in 1838/39 and working as bricksetter. Marr registered in West Derby in August 1868.

No Screece/Sercer/Sercee/Screese/Creese/Crease/Reece/Reese/Rees/Reis/Pethick/Pethicton or other variants can locate James Thomas prior to 1868. I have also tried isolating what seems to be the only facts that are consistent i.e. his first and middle names, occupation and birthdate and checking findmypast, freebmd.ancestry and igi for all births in that period and earlier census in Sevenoaks and Plympton for similar characteristics. I have no proof that he was even actually born anywhere but Lancashire although the middle name from his marr cert suggests Devon/Cornwall and his wife Maria Lane was herself born in Kingsbridge Devon in 1846.

I would be most appreciative of any other suggestions regarding how I might try and trace him further.

this is difficult!

Does the marriage certificate have a father's name for him?
Presumably they were both living in West Derby area when they married and then moved to Manchester area. You can't imagine him giving other places of birth if he was born Lancashire but even so- Kent and Devon are a bit far away from each other. Devon may have been given because of Maria.
Will still keep looking.

Yes, I forgot to add this detail which only further confounds the situation. Father's surname (and occupation) on marr cert is exactly the same as his-James Thomas Pethick Sercee which leads me to believe that it was likely he was illegitimate and did not know his father's name. Yes, I thought it odd as well that we have Kent, Lancashire and Devon. As you point out, there is a link to Lancashire and Devon but I have no idea where Sevenoaks Kent fits it and why he would give it as his birthplace for two consecutive census periods.

Thanks for trying to assist with this puzzle!

1851 HO107; Piece: 1879; Folio: 608; Page: 75
has a M L P Sereeck - but definitely written as Screech -orphan as a pupil which does not bode well for finding parents.

There are possible deaths for a James and a Jemima on free BMD

Thank you very much both of you for all your help. I feel certain that this is the right family so now will obtain a few more certs to confirm and also post a look-up request on another board to see if anyone can locate a marriage of James Thomas Pethick Screech and Jemima in Plympton 1830-1835.

Cheers,

Sorry should have said that those baptisms were in Plympton St Mary.

On the Devon FHS Deanery of the 3 Towns CD I have found the marriage

SCREECH, JAMES married PETHICK, JEMIMA on  7th November 1833 in Stoke Damerel.

No certificates this early, but Plymouth & West Devon Record Office will supply a photocopy of the entry for a small fee.

I can't find them in 1841 yet- if those deaths are theirs they should still be around.

There's a Jemima "Terrick" (page faint and hard to read) in Plympton in 1841 with children William 6, Marina 5, James 2, who I think must be Jemima Screech.  She's a 35 yr old charwoman born Devon: HO 107/238 book 6 folio 13 p20.

Modified: also at the same address, though separated by a single line, is a Maria or Marina Pethick, 40 b Devon - possibly a sister or sister-in-law of Jemima?
