Butchart brother's ..... which mother?
« on: Wednesday 12 March 08 18:59 GMT (UK) »

I have 2 Butchart brother's in my tree:

James Butchart born c1824 (my 3x gt grandfather) and Andrew born c 1829.  On both brother's death certificates their parents names are given as Andrew Butchart and Janet Burnett.

However, I have found these brothers on an online tree where their mother's name is given as Helen Low...

My first instinct was that the other tree was wrong HOWEVER ... Andrew Jnr gave 2 of his children the middle name of "Low" which would back up this choice of mother.

I cannot find a marriage for an Andrew Butchart and Janet Burnett but there IS a marriage to Helen Low in 1819.  Neither can I find a death certificate for Andrew Snr, Janet OR Helen  Undecided

What I HAVE found is a death certificate for an Andrew Butchart died 1887 aged 82 which is witnessed by Alexander LOW who is listed as a nephew but in this case he is the appparent of widower of 1st Helen Martin and 2nd Ann Paterson so no apparent connection to my Andrew but there's that flippin name again !.

So ....

Can anyone help me figure out why the name Low is cropping up so often in my research?  Did Helen Low die young and were her children brought up by Janet Burnett? and how likely is it that all 3 of them died before 1855?

Thanks, a very confuddled Thisty

hi thisty  Smiley

andrew butchart , helen low & children all appear on the IGI
the children , all born dundee , would tie in with the marriage you
found so i can't see anything wrong with the tree
were your andrew and james born dundee ?

Well the thing that is confusing me is that BOTH Andrew and James' death certificates names Janet Burnett as their mother ....... it was a different informant in each case so if Janet Burnett was NOT the mother then why woudl 2 different people think that she was?

Both my James and Andrew were born in Montrose according to their death certificates.
