Jenkins family Isle of Purbeck area
« on: Thursday 10 April 08 18:46 BST (UK) »

I am trying to find the parents/baptism of William Jenkins c 1720s.  He was a victualler in Corfe Castle.  From his will he had at least two brothers still alive in 1770. The Eldest John Jenkins who had a son John and Robert Jenkins who had a son Henry.  The brothers would have been born in the 1820s None are baptised in Corfe Castle and only William appears to have lived thereuntil his death c1774.  I am trying to find if there was a connection between this Jenkins Family and the other Jenkins of Corfe Castle descended from a Morgan Jenkins of the 17th century. All baptisms in Corfe seem to be linked to the latter family.
Unfortunately the search function on opcdorset has been disabled indefinitely.  I can not find them in any of the online parish registers available which indexes say have Jenkins records.  Any help gratefully received.

Hi medhist,

I have a spreadsheet (built from Dorset OPC data) of all BMDs within a 5 mile radius of Corfe Castle. The picture there shows exactly what you describe.

First baptism is Jane in 1654 to Morgan, mother probably Mary as she is noted on the next baptism of Thomas in 1657.

There is definitely no William baptised around that time.

The first William was born in 1755 to Henry and Sarah.

I suppose this means that he WASNT baptised in:

Church Knowle
Corfe Castle
Kimmeridge
Langton Matravers
Steeple
Swanage
Wareham
Worth Matravers

Hope this is helpful, even in a negative sort of way. Good luck.

Paul

I expect you have it but there is a William Jenkins marrying Mary Cockram 10 Jun 1750 in Corfe Castle.

Have you tried google searching 'william jenkins site:www.opcdorset.com'? Several come up.

Hello.  Thank you Paul.  I hadn't tried googling that combination.  I'll look further into those results. There are relatively few Jenkins in the area considering it is quite a common name.  There is a Jenkins family in Wimborne Minster who may be related but not found any conection yet. William Jenkins and Mary Cockram are my direct ancestors that's why I am looking for his origins.

There is a thriving family of Jenkins in Winfrith - over 100 years.

William appears to be a family name.  William and Christian Jenkins named their firstborn William, 21 Jul 1690 but he died when he was 2.  From what I could see, the family left and went elsewhere after Christian died in 1728.  Their William may have produced the William you are seeking, but not at Winfrith.

Theres a welsh sounding Jenkins - Rees Jenkins - shipwright in the 1831 Allington Census.

Thanks for that.  I think I shall have to follow up all the leads I can find on the Jenkins in Dorset to see whether I hit on the correct famiy.  I found a few records about William and his son Henry when browsing in other records in Dorset record office online catalogue so I may pick up some thing from there at some point.
