Great Grandfather Edmund
|
My grandmother (born 1887)was in service, I believe as a seamstress, for much of her younger life and for some of the time was employed at Somerleyton Hall. Are there likely to be any records anywhere for staff at the Hall, or can anyone suggest any other way I could find out when she was there? My father was born in 1920 and spent much of his early life with his grandparents, so she could have been there before or after his birth.
Any suggestions?

Hi Linnett
You could try their website:
www.somerleyton.co.uk
They have a contact us button, and although that might lead to the bookings section, they maybe able to help you with history and whether there are any employee records from back then
Hope this helps

If you wish to check in Census the family name of the Somerleyton's is Crossley.
They are part of the Crossley Carpet people, it's quite strange to walk around the house and see all the beautiful old furniture etc. as in most stately homes the floors have rugs and polished wood, but the Crossley carpets are very much in evidence.
It's a lovely place to visit if you ever get the chance and there is a small but fun maze which children love to explore.

Might be worth contacting the SRO Lowestoft branch to see if they have any information deposited with them?

Good luck with the search.

Thank you Ann
Thank you for producing a delightful book about Somerleyton. I bought a copy of your book from Abebooks.co.uk recently, in good condition now sitting on my 'to-be-read' pile.
Just finished the book on the Garrett girls of Leiston.

Hi Pat, thanks, that was my first effort and now I'm hoping to put even more into it but also vol 2 will cover the present Lord Somerleyton's time there, up to his handing over of the estate to the Hon Hugh - the ethos of the place is changing at an amazing pace, much more talk of the hall as venue for the 'leisure industry'. Leiston - I know it well, living just up the A12 from there! All the best Ann
