1870 census please !
« on: Wednesday 12 March 08 22:08 GMT (UK) »

This photo I believe was taken in the 1870's .... all I know is - the Dad was Alexander Sutherland born England ( or Ireland !!  Tongue ) wife I believe but not sure is Jessie ....... I have no idea of the names of the children .... came to Colorado in 1860's - but when I don't know and fought in the civil war .... I have his army service - he was with 1st Colorado Volunteer Cavalry ( ? I think thats the right way round without looking at my notes !! )

I'd appreciate any help ! ( I don't have access to A******* right now !! )

I went downtown today to the archives to see if I could find if he was naturalised ....  wouldn't you know they close on Wednesdays

Hi Annie,  this may be him  but all I can see at the moment is the Index.   Getting an error message when I go to the image  ---   will check back later and see if I can get you the rest of his family.

1870  Denver, Arapahoe, Colorado Territory
Alexander Sutherland  42  (abt 1828)   Ireland

Have you looked for him in 1880 on the IGI ??

Hey Annie. What a great pic. I think I have him, but A******y won't let me access the record. It keeps giving me an error message. Let me give you what I have from the index and then I'll see what can be found in 1880. they are in Denver, Arapahoe, CO:

Alexander Sutherland, b. 1828 Ireland
Anna, b. 1869 CO
Anna J, b. 1838 Ohio
Burt E, b. 1866 Wisconson
Charles, b. 1842 NY
Ellen, b 1865 CO
Mary, b 1868 CO
Nelle, 1841, NY
Rosetta 1863 CO

the Anna J could be Jessie. Let me see what I can find. It's very frustrating not being able to get into the actual record to see if they are all in the same house.

Hi Lissa,

I am getting the same problem. Thought I'd check 1880 also.

It appears it is all the census records that can't be accessed right now, but on ancestry I found a Burt Sutherland born in Wisconsin living with grandparents in Conton, St. Lawrenece County, NY (neighbors of my gg grandparents  Grin). It says his parents were born in NY, so maybe it's not the same one, but it's a coincidence.

How can he be born in 2 places?  Huh A big ego or something? When we can get into the records, we might learn more. I couldn't find much in the 1880, but maybe with these names, you can have a look there. I am off to read to my kids now. Time for bed.

I can get the records okay:

1870 Denver, Arapahoe, Colorado

(Alexander) Sutherland    42     Musician    b. Ireland
(Anna) Sutherland           32     Keeping House    b. Ohio
Rosetta Sutherland       7        b. Colorado
Ellen        "                    5                ditto
Mary        "                    2                ditto
Anna        "                   1                 ditto

1880 Denver, Arapahoe, Colorado

Alex. Suthernd       50    Musician    b. Ireland (father and mother born Scotland)
Anna      ditto         41    Keeping House   B. Pennsylvania (father Conn. mother NY)
Rosetta   ditto        17   At Home    b. Colorado
Ellen        ditto        15   At school        ditto
Mary        ditto        13      ditto            ditto
Annie       ditto        11      ditto            ditto
George    ditto         8       ditto            ditto
Josephine  ditto      6         ditto           ditto
Alice        ditto        3          ditto           ditto
Emma Regan     30   sister in law         b. Ohio (father Conn, mother NY)
Rena Regan      8     niece                    b. Iowa

1870 states wife as Anna not Anna J - the christian names of Alexander and Anna are in brackets and the last figure is 'close bracket' not J.   Also, in 1880 indexed as Suthernd.

They didn't appear to have a son Burt - not listed with them anyway.
Currently checking 1900.

Alexander said on his army papers he was born England .... and all the flowery obits say his father was a soldier who guarded Napoleon on St Helena !!  Smiley Smiley .... so who knows !!  Grin

Burt could also be the one Kathy found ! but like I said who knows !!

but he was definitely a musician !! ( and army !! ) .... he founded the Denver Municipal Band !!  Grin
