Edmund JANE « on: Thursday 13 March 08 00:35 GMT (UK) »
I have been talking to a gentleman from Australia who is descended from Edmund Jane and Ann Pitt who were married in Liskeard on August 15 1809. He believes Edmund's father is a William Jane but has very little other info. I believe Edmund was born in 1790 to Ralph Jane and Elizabeth Wilton in Dranes (St Neot). We are hoping that Liskeard records will show his father's name or that St Neot records will show what happened to Edmund but we have access to neither. Can anyone help out. Thanks !

Hi Rick,
It does sound a little iffy doesn't it, particularly as this chap can't seem to provide any sort of proof of this. Has he told you why he believes the father was William? He must surely have a reason to believe this.
Unfortunately marriage records pre civil registration do not provide fathers names. The best you can hope to gain from the entry is that the witness names may help tie him to a family.
I have had a look about and I can see no other Edmund baptised the right sort of time. I see Edmund was aged 50 in 1841 so that fits. For an age of 50 to have been provided he would have given his age as between 50 and 54. Unfortunately he did not make it to 1851 where we would have gotten a place of birth. The death certificate may provide a little more idea of his age if you do not have it. (No guarantees of course as this information is only as good as good as the person who provided it.)

Thanks for the quick reply Kris. Wayne's e-mail stated that he had been told Edmund's parents were William Jane and Catherine Bennet and also that there were brothers William (1786),Robert (1788) and James/John (1798 - married Mary Liddicote). He had no idea where this had come from and told me he was trying to verify it. Maybe another relative now dead wrote this down? I have Edmund's death certificate and it lists his age as 55 (pretty close to my guy) but no other useful info. Will try to contact the OPC for Liskeard and see if any thing turns up there. Anyway thanks for your effort and I'm sure we will talk again.
