Douglas/Maxwell family - Portpatrick
« on: Thursday 13 March 08 09:31 GMT (UK) »

I have been tracing my family tree.  I have traced part of the family to Scotland.   I would like to know more information on the Douglas family:

I have only got the following information:

Thomas Douglas (Dowglas)  Married Elizabeth Maxwell

        Daughter Elizabeth Douglas
        DOB: Appx 1766
        Portpatrick
Elizabeth Married William Hannay DOB: Appx 1762

Can anyone please help.

Keith

Do you have documentary evidence to back up these names? The dates sound a little vague, are they from church records or submitted IGI entries? If you have any locations for the marriages it might be a good starting point.

There are a few Elizabeth Maxwells around Kirkcudbrightshire at that time (didn't see any for Wigtownshire), but without further details it is hard to narrow it down.

Hello Keith

Had a look on the IGI www.familysearch.org and:

1.  Cannot find marriages for either Thomas Douglas/Dowglas/Douglass to an Elizabeth Maxwell.
2.  Canno t find birth of Elizabeth Douglass- other than 2 'submitted' entries'- first of birth only in Portpatrick no parents names ,and 'submitted' entry of a marriage to William Hannay - no dates given.
3.  Unable to find marriage entry for ED and WH.
4.  Found a number of submitted and 'extracted entries for children to ED and WH in Portpatrick a total of 16 entries - for ? 8 children - I dont know if you've got them all.  First birth Euphemia Hanney on 23 Aug 1788 Portpatrick.  Shall pm them to you and once you filter them out, if you repost in date of birth order - we can help further if required?

If unsure of Scottish research.  Copies of all 'extracted ' entries can be sourced from Scotlands People.

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/   (you’ll find people calling it SP) This is the official govt website lots of interesting stuff can be found - mainly from your grand and gt grandparents backwards..  Basically a per per view site - buying 30 units at £6 a go - which would allow the download of 5 entries -but a lot of free searching can be done.  Free to register and lots of good info on research in Scotland.
