Hi Chatters
I've been trying to solve this mistery for some time but as it is relatively recent, little info is available on-line "that I can find". I'll give the bare facts to try to keep it understandable, will give further info if helpful but it may just confuse the issue.
Here goes:
1881 Census:
William Nobbs. Head. East Molesey Anna Louisa Nobbs, nee Hunt. W. Sister to Thirza. Harry Alexander Nobbs b. 1877. Son.
Frederick Griffin. Head. East Molesey Thirza Griffin, nee Hunt. W. Sister to Anna Louisa. Charles Frederick Griffin b. 1872. Son.
My Grandmother.
Florence Eleanor Gill, married, Harry Alexander Nobbs in 1906. He was KIA WW1. 1917. Florence remarried with a Charles Griffin, widdowed husband of her friend. They may have all lived in Linden Rd Hampton. I know that Florence and Charles lived there, also other relations.
The burning question: were Florence's husbands cousins? Second marriage produced a daughter in 1925.
Possibilities: Charles Griffin's first wife was Mary Prime? There are other options! Florence & Charles may have married in 1924. Florence may have married a different Charles Griffin and this is just a coincidence!
Without access to later BMD records or Parrish records I can't prove the possibilities.
It's an interesting puzzle, Any help resolving it would be much appreciated.
Howard.

Hi Howard,
The obvious thing would seem to be to start with your grandmother's 2nd marriage certificate to find her husband Charles Griffin's age, occupation, and his father's name and occupation.
You say there are several possibilities, (although I couldn't see one in 1924) so have you tried contacting the local register office to check Florence's father's name and occupation and that Florence was a widow maiden name Gill, to be sure you have the right cert before you buy it? The GRO also offers a reference checking service when you order certs online, costs £3 but that's included in the £7 fee if it's the correct one.
List of Register Offices at http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/regoff.html
GRO at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates
just found this marriage 1923 Sept Qu Staines 3a 47 Florence E. Nobbs to Charles D. Griffin

Hi Barbara
Thanks for the tips.
Trouble is, I can't find a Marriage or Deaths, come to that, still many gaps on BMD, though I know Florence died in 1965 and Charles later. I have all of Florence's and Harry's information going way back.
I haven't been in touch with the local record office yet, they may have parrish records.
Regards
Howard

If yuo havent got any details of the marriage, then I would start with the birth in 1925
just found this marriage 1923 Sept Qu Staines 3a 47 Florence E. Nobbs to Charles D. Griffin
If you've been searching on freebmd, it's not yet fully transcribed. This is the only marriage I can find in the full GRO index from April 1917 when Harry died to 1925 when you say this second marriage produced a daughter. Seems like a good bet to me.
Once you know Charles' father's details it should then be easier to find him in census and establish if he was indeed cousin to Thirza's husband.

Hello again Barbara
How do you do it?
I have all of Harry's details, It's just the later records that are not yet transcribed on BMD that's a problem. I only mentioned the deaths to emphesize the point. I have an older cousin who remembered that Florence died in Dec 1965 but its great to have your official record.
I didn't know where Florence died, she was living in Hampton at the time. She must have been in hospital at Hounslow.
More Appreciation!!!
Lizdb
Thanks for your interest and suggestion.
Bye for now
Howard

Hi Barbara
I had heard of findmypast but wasn't sure I'd find what I wanted there and this little mistery was probably the only use I would have for it. Re Ancestry, I don't have a current subscription but our Library service has a county-wide subscription, I've looked there but got no more than on BMD, maybe the've updated now.
I'm fairly sure that Charles Griffin died between 1965 and 1971, but my main Query now is His first marriage and any offspring. I believe there was a Gladys and a Tishy (Terrence).
Barbara, I really appreciate your look ups but please tell me your pay/view expenses. I'm so happy to get the info but would not be as pleased if it meant you were out of pocket. You must let me reimburse you, I really mean that.
Thanks
Howard

Howard,
We don't do look-ups for anything but our own pleasure on this site, it's all free!
Findmypast has complete bmd indexes, most census, migration, and military records
If you look on ancestry, make sure you check that you're searching the full GRO index and not the 'partial' ones. From the search page, click on 'England & Wales bmd indexes' under 'Historical Searches' on the right side panel, up will come a page showing 'Complete BMD Index ranges & Images 1837-1983' or 'Complete BMD Indexes 1984-2005' ~ they are what you need to search, the other section is 'Partial FreeBMD Indexes & Images 1837-1983' which is taken from freebmd and free to search.

Hi Barbara
Very kind, I hope I'll be able to help others sometimes.
I've learnt something else about Ancestry now, for which I thank you.

Hi Lizdb
Some of my posts seem to be dissapearing. I posted a bit about Griffin & Nobbs being painters etc, but gone!
Anyway, I'm sure they must have had some sort of business relationship, they also lived just around the corner from each other. I followed every house around between them on the Mormon Index, (1881 Census). it's quite easy to do there.
I'm puzzled about missing posts, one of my replies to Barbara is also not here.

Hi all
An update, so those who were so helpful can see the progress they have helped me make. I haven't been able to get to the library yet, out here in the sticks it's only open part time but I found the following by trawling freeBMD.
Charles 1st wife was Elizabeth Wright. Children found so far, as follows:
Doris: 1912 Gladys: 1914 Eileen: 1919
I've not found Tishy yet, hopefully will next week, when I get to the library.
Regards
Howard
