Poor Claude :-( he looks so haunted. I daresay he saw things during the war that impacted upon him. Cheers Sarndra www.sarndra.com
I think you are right Sarndra, as I said I never knew him as he died two years before I was born. My Dad often spoke of him regarding his work, he built the house I was born in, but not really about family life and my uncle (Dad's older brother) is still alive and well into his 80's but gets upset easily when I try to talk about him although wanted to know what I could find out about his WW1 record. He survived war in the Somme and Active Service on the Western Front for 3 & a half years, with the Royal Field Artillery so I am sure he saw many awful things, we can hardly imagine.
Regards Crystal

Regards Crystal It's understandable the elderly relatives get upset talking about it...must be some deep emotional hurt underpinning it all after losing family, but on the same token a shame they don't so that we can pass the information on to others so these courageous acts aren't lost forever and can be documented. They deserve it.
Did you ever get Claudes full military records? I got my great grandfather John LEES's records pertaining to his time from 1902 to 1912 whilst in the Royal Scotts Fusiliers .. it was so fascinating .... they are so detailed Some information maybe a bit of a surprise that you may not normally find as full medical records are given, but nonetheless fascinating. Here's my Johns... http://sarndra.com/royal.html

I will be looking when I visit Kew in the autumn
Took a look at your John - he has left a puzzle to solve Nice pictures of your children as well.
All the best Crystal

Here's mine!
My great grandad (second from left), his two siblings and my great grandparents, Herbert and Alice Marchant.
I think it was taken around 1916/7, meaning that my gg grandad would have been on some rare leave from the Navy.

Hi Everyone and thanks for sharing those beautiful photos. Where can I find "Our Ancestors 1 - 5" ? please? I just love looking at old photos, they're so fascinating.
PaulaToo, no, we haven't run out of ancestors yet.
Here's my Dad sitting, so casually, on a chair in the middle of a street in Cairo, Egypt during WWII with some of his best buddies. I love this photo, it's such a hoot!
