Meech and Clayton
« on: Thursday 13 March 08 19:04 GMT (UK) »

Can anyone find the marriage between Fred Harland Clayton and Agnes Meech? They had a child together, also called Fred Harland Jnr in 1885, with the birth registered in St Mary, Paddington, Middlesex ( I have the birth cert for this)
In 1891 census, Fred Harland Jnr, was living with his mother in Dorchester, who now appears to be called Ruth (born Charmouth c1863).  Ruth is married, not widowed, but Fred Harland senior is not on the census.
I would be really grateful if someone could help unravel this for me

Hi

Does the birth cert describe Agnes as Agnes Clayton formerly Meech.  Or does it just say mother was Agnes Meech

It says formerly Meech? What is the difference?

It shows they were definitely married - not just that they were unmarried and registering their child (eg) father Fred H Clayton mother Agnes Meech as opposed to father Fred H Clayton mother Agnes Clayton formerly Meech

Have a look at the 1881 census - there is a Ruth Meech b 1862 Charminster Devon parents James & Sarah.  However - on scrutiny of the 1891 image - I reckon her birthplace is either Avonmouth or Weymouth

What was Fred's occupation on Fred jnr's birth cert

Fred was recorded as a wine merchant on the birth cert.  I agree that it is difficult to read the 1891 census but it still doesn't explain why she is suddenly called Ruth and also I am unable to find any record of a Clayton/Meech marriage.
