ANY form of help much appreciated!
« on: Thursday 13 March 08 13:30 GMT (UK) »

Hello there

I am currently trying in earnest to trace my fathers side of the family, he only knows of a few people, which makes it exciting but Im finding it very difficult at the moment.

My search has found that his mother Mary A Shannon was born in 1912 in Tynemouth and the mothers name was McKie. My dad tells me that she had 4 brothers named Michael, William, Goerge and Thomas and a sister Catherine. This is pretty much all I know and not sure where to go next. Ive got a free trial with ancestry but seem to be going round in circles at the moment.
Mary Shannon eventually moved to South harrow with her sister Catherine (and I think her brothers) in Middlesex and then married my Grandfather Frank Connor. My dad didnt know his dad and we only have that this was his name and it is believed that he comes from Manchester originally.

Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks in advance  Smiley Smiley

just focusing on the earliest stuff ..... there isnt a marriage I can see of a SHANNON to a McKie leading up to 1912 ....

you might want to get that 1912 Birth Cert and reveal the full names of the parents....   do you know if the brothers were older than Mary A. Shannon ?

Hi both and Welcome HairyChest (made me giggle, that! Grin)

There's a Michael with mother's maiden name McKay registered in Tynemouth (1919 I believe), and I did find a Shannon/McKay marriage

Dec 1900 Gateshead  10a 1642
Mary McKay - Michael Shannon

Bit hypothetical, I know  Undecided (but if they turn out to be the ones, I can see them in 1901, Mary age 20, Michael age 22, both born Felling. Living with Mary's parents)

I'm with Newf - I think you need Mary Ann's birth cert   Undecided

Thank you so much for your swift reply young Newfster! Smiley

Ahhh thats interesting that their isnt a marriage between the two leading up to 1912!

I have just ordered the birth certificate of my gran Mary and it should be with me in a weeks time so hopefully that will make things all that more easier!

I have just text my dad regarding whether the brothers were older than Mary so I should get a response around the same time as I get the certificate knowing my dads response time!  Grin

Thanks again Newf, i'll let you know how I get on!

Hey Tati, thanks so much to you too for your super fast reply! Smiley

Its funny you should mention the McKay surname as I kind of came to the conclusion that it was probably in line with the McKie surname, having change over time for one reason or another. My searches threw up many McKay links and along the way so maybe that was the case re: the name - McKay -> Mckie.

This is all very exciting, and very addictive I must say.

Is there anyway of finding out about my Grandad with the very minimal information that I have? Like I say all I know is his name - Frank Connor, his place of birth Manchester and that he then married Mary A Shannon and resided in South Harrow before going to war and never returning. Huh

Like I mentioned above I've just sent off for Mary's birth certificate, so hopefully this will aid me further in finding out more about my family that I never knew....

Thanks so much Tati, it is much appreciated I can assure you. Smiley

With a name like Frank Connor, I'm not sure it's going to be that easy  Tongue

First step would to get hold of the marriage cert for Frank and Mary, which will show Frank's father's name. Can you tell us when their first child was born?  Smiley

Grin Yeah its not as though its a very distinctive name is it! Grin

Ahhh okay thanks, thought that may be the case. I certainly can tell you Tati, they only had the one child, my father and he was born in October of 1942.

I can't swear it's the marriage but I think it looks good, doesn't it?

If Young Newfster was online he'd be able to tell if it's the correct registration district  Smiley

From here - you've guessed it - it's a matter of spending another £7 to obtain the marriage certificate, which should tell you everyone's ages and father's names.

Yeah Tati I'd say that it looks pretty spot on too, the year looks good, right names and its in Middlesex and not far from Harrow.

Haha I knew another £7 was likely to be on its way out of my wallet again! Cool, well many many thanks Tati, your help has been invaluable, i'll get onto ordering that marriage certificate straight away!

Thanks again!  Smiley

Hey Newfster I've just found out the ages of the brothers and sisters. Right okay, acording to my dad, Thomas was the youngest, next was Michael then he thinks that it was George, followed by William. Catherine was the oldest followed by Mary.

Hey Tati and Newf  Smiley

Well I've just received the birth certificate of my grandmother Mary Shannon.

So the info:

She was born on 6th May 1912. Her father was called Michael Shannon and her mum was called Mary Shannon also, formely McKie.

Am I now to look for the marriage of both her father and mother now?

Thanks in advance! Smiley

Given their first names, I quite like the Michael Shannon / Mary McKay marriage in 1900 - what do others think?

Not sure you need the cert for now - we can try to trace tham back on census given we have them in 1901 - do you have access to the 1901 census?  Smiley
