Alderman Plumber Brass Founder 1901
« on: Thursday 13 March 08 16:25 UTC (UK) »

I have discovered that james Laidler was Alderman Plumber Brass founder and Finisher Engineer in Elvet City of Durham in 1901. Employing 23 men and 25 boys. Can anyone tell what the company was called and where I might be able to find out more about it.
Not sure this should be here or in occupations !!
Many thanks

Hi Nicola,

Have you tried trade directories, perhaps http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/

or perhaps google his name if he was an alderman?

I found this site showing some of the things made there - putters and hewers tokens for coalminers

http://www.rootschat.com/links/02z1/

I did say if you googled his name you might find something:

apparently he was a J.P. and Mayor of Durham in 1884 and there's an index to an obituary http://www.rootschat.com/links/01z7/
list of former Mayors here:

Do you need any census look-ups for him or do you have access to them all?

Right, so now post where you've got to, what you already know, who you're looking for, and exactly what you want to know, you could start it on a new post on the county look-up board.

Someone's sure to have an answer!

James Laidler & Sons were makers of miners safety lamps and I believe that they were in business in New Elvet, Durham City from c1870 to c1930.

You can find photos and descriptions of some of their lamps on collectors websites and occasionally a Laidler lamp comes up for sale on eBay.
