SOUTHWELL in Bridgnorth
« on: Sunday 30 March 08 19:45 BST (UK) »

Hi Folks,

I'm trying to locate to which Church John Henry HANDS, from Kings Norton, Worcs, might have married Sarah Ann SOUTHWELL in.  If I have the right lass she was the daughter of George SOUTHWELL, a confectioner on the High Street in Bridgenorth and Ann.

According to the 1851 the High Street was in the parish of St. Leonard's.  Was this the only Church they would have used?

Regards

Mike

Hi Mike,

The marriage of Sarah Ann Southwell to John Henry Hands was mentioned in the 20 Jan 1866 issue of the local newspaper The Bridgnorth Journal.

Source – my own book “Bridgnorth – News and Events between 1852 and 1900”

Within a few days, I’ll check the microfilm copy of the newspaper for any further details.
I’ll also check the church register.

Gwynne,

Many thanks for this.  I shall wait....patiently   Smiley

Was this just a passing marriage or was the SOUTHWELL family "of note?"

Hi Mike,

Notice in The Bridgnorth Journal published 20 Jan 1866.

Marriage on 16th Jan at St. Leonard's Church Bridgnorth (by the Rev. G Bellet M.A. incumbent, assisted by the Rev H Parsons M.A.) Mr John Henry HANDS of Edgbaston, Birmingham, youngest son of Mr Benjamin HANDS, King's Norton, to Sarah Ann, youngest daughter of Mr George SOUTHWELL, High Street, Bridgnorth. No cards.

Also this Notice;

Jan 16th at Handsworth Old church (by the Hon and Rev Augustus Legge) Mr Benaiah  HANDS, son of Mr B HANDS, King's Norton, to Alice, daughter of Mr PETTY of Handsworth.

From St. Leonard's, Bridgnorth Parish register;

16th Jan 1866, marriage of John Henry HANDS, age 24, Bachelor, Clerk of Works of Edgbaston. Father = Benjamin HANDS, Tradesman.
to
Sarah Ann SOUTHWELL, age 25, Spinster of High Street. Father = George SOUTHWELL, Confectioner.

Both signed. Witnesses = George SOUTHWELL and [feint ink ] ? SOUTHWELL.

Other entries in my book that perhaps mention that branch of the SOUTHWELL family. As printed in The Bridgnorth Journal dated;

1 Dec 1852 - Married in St Leonard's. Mr HUNT, Ironmonger of Kidderminster to Miss SOUTHWELL, eldest dau of Mr G SOUTHWELL, Confectioner of Bridgnorth.

7 Nov 1857 - Married in Edgbaston. Mr D.S SOUTHWELL, eldest son of Mr G SOUTHWELL, Confectioner of Bridgnorth to Emma BULLOCK of Newent, Gloucs.

17 Nov 1860 - Married in Ironbridge. Thomas SOUTHWELL, son of George SOUTHWELL of Bridgnorth to Amelia CHILDE, fifth dau of Edward SMITH, The Orchard, Ironbridge.

12 May 1866 - Died - Mary SOUTHWELL, age 38, dau of George SOUTHWELL of 28 High Street.

28 Nov 1868 - Died - George SOUTHWELL, age 64, Confectioner.

Hope this provides some new branches in your tree.

Gwynne

This is excellent.  Two for the price of one!  Cheesy

I should be able to build two more branches through to 1901 now.

Thanks again.
