County Lunatic Asylum
« on: Thursday 13 March 08 17:13 GMT (UK) »

On the 1841 census, my 2xgt grandmother is listed as a laundry maid at the County Lunatic Asylum, and I wonder if anyone has any information on the asylum.   I have seen Springfield asylum mentioned in a book I have on Kempston, don't know if this is the same place.

Hi Ann,

On this website, if you click on B at the top then Bedfordshire at the right, you get information about Bedford County Asylum, or ditto for Springfield, which was near Wandsworth...

Thanks for those links, very interesting reading.  It seems from the Beds archive that Springfield House was a private asylum in Kempston, so nothing to do with the county asylum.  Ann

There is a good book A Proper House - Bedford Lunatic Asylum 1812 - 1860 by Bernard Cashman, available in the Beds Family History Society library, (a copy in front of me now) that states that Springfield Asylum opened in Kempston in April 1836 and that private patients then in the county asylum were transferred there shortly afterwards.
