Hi Peony,

From a Bucks FHS CD:

buried 23 Jul 1837 Robert Axten aged 80 of Penn

buried 11 Oct 1840 Henney Axten aged 58 of Penn

Bit of an age gap?!  Huh

Hi Jill,

That was quick - thanks.

It does not help me in my search though.  I am looking for the baptism of my ggg Grandfather Freeman Austin.  All through his census records he puts his birth between 1817 and 1823 in Penn.  From his marriage certificate we have his fathers name as Robert Austin who was a farm labourer.

I was hoping that Robert or Henny died soon after 1823 and they just did not get round to baptising Freeman.   Sad

I have just had a search for Austin Baptisms done by Bucks FHS and this is the only Robert about at the right time and in the right place. Huh

I am not sure where to go next.

Anyway - thank you very much for such a quick reply.

Peony,

There is a Freeman baptised in Penn in more or less that time frame but he's -

baptised 29 Oct 1815 Freeman s/o Joseph & Martha Salter of Penn, wheelwright.

I don't know if this is signifcant, or whether there was a run on the name Freeman at the time! I didn't see any other Freemans baptised in Penn between 1815 and 1825.

Could Joseph have died and Martha have remarried to a Mr Austin? I'll have a closer look at the PRs.

No - Martha & Joseph Salter didn't die until 1848 and 1856 respectively!  Roll Eyes

I just looked on Family History Online and there's hundreds of little blighters called Freeman! Sad

I notice that FHO's 1881 census entry for him as him born in High Wycombe Penn - and HW PRs aren't on the IGI, so is this a possibility?

Hi,

I have downloaded the census records from Ancestry - so I just had another look and it says:

Bucks, Penn, High Wycombe

So yes this will be worth looking at - thanks

But all his other census records state Bucks, Penn.

I think I will need to look at Bastardy orders around this time - just in case he is the son of the Elizabeth Axten who was having children by different men and baptising them in Penn.

or

Henny would have been 39 if we take Freemans birth as 21 - so put him back with the Robert and Henny marriage - as a late baby.

I believe the age difference between Robert and Henny was because he has a previous son Moses baptised with another wife Sarah in 1803.

I was only looking at this one again as I have taken advantage of Ancestrys £1 for a month subscription.

I found the Bucks FHS search very good - it took 24 hours to come back with 12 pages of results. Grin

Thanks
