Thankyou for all the help.Firby is a nightmare.
Born March 1845 Hawnby
1851 with father John 34 aglab,Jane 11,Mortimer 8,William 3 and John 1.
1861 firby is 16 servant boy.Spelt FARBY
1871 firby app mason single 18.Spelt FRERBY
Could there be a mistake in the 1871 census with his age,I read it as 18?
I cannot find his marriage or death.
The other Firby is 1852 Old Byland died 1878 Selby.Sometimes listed as Forby!!!

The other Firby is 1852 Old Byland died 1878 Selby.Sometimes listed as Forby!!!

I think if you read through the posts that this 1871 one I found aged 18 is the b.1852 Old Byland one, and so not yours, and that Jane found you the right one in 1871 & 1881 living in Thornaby with his name changed to Robert  Smiley

I wonder why he changed to Robert, checked it all and you are right, just changed his name, his brother William moves to Thornaby married Ann Thompson.So I think you have solved it.Thankyou
