Willian/William, Herts
« on: Thursday 25 June 09 12:45 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I have been doing some research on my maternal side and have come across an ancestor, Jane Wren, who was born C1840, in, and this is the bit I need help with, Willian or William in Herts. Does anyone know which it is and if so where it is?

Regards

The parish of Willian went right up to the edge of Baldock - the modern roads of Norton Road and Weston Way used to be the boundary between Baldock and Willian parishes.  It looks like the family may well have lived in this area on the edge of Baldock rather than Willian village, as they had some of their children (including your Jane) baptised at Baldock rather than Willian - it also looks like there was an earlier Jane who died young and was buried at Norton - Norton parish also included some north-west parts of the town of Baldock.  Norton and Willian were merged with their other neighbour Letchworth to become Letchworth Garden City in the early 20th century.

Thanks both for your replies and info,

Knowing that Willian was that close to Baldock makes sense with others I have found.

I also thought that there had been an earlier Jane, but was put off by the second one, it must have been very strange for the parents.

Regards
