I am researching some members of my family who moved to Weston-super-mare around 1918/19. The address I have is "Amyl"(?) Woodland Road, WSM.Have found the road, but can't track down house - probably name has changed, etc. Anyone have an idea? Also, they seem to have moved to Uphill around 1926 and I have "Sandcroft", Uphill, as the address. Can find Sandcroft Rd in Uphill, wondered how recent that is, was there a house on site before the road came into being?

Hi There is a Sandcroft Ave in WSM post code BS23 4SS. Have you tried looking at the Landregistry online website? I had a brief look at Woodland Road and the houses are only listed by number 1 to 10 and 10a and then 3 is missing. There seems on a google search to be a newspaper account for a obit at Sandcroft Uphill- name of Whiting. At least the account would give a date. also there are some houses for sale listed on a google address search - may give an indication of the date.
The library in Weston Super Mare may help. There is a local historian called Brian Austin who is contactable through the library who is a fountain of knowledge.
Hope this helps a bit

Sorry forget to give you the web address of the Land registry
www.landregisteronline.gov.uk
this is a useful site generally for finding property
Also if all else fails put a comment on the forum of the local newspaper in Weston -the Weston Mercury
www.thewestonmercury.co.uk

The family living at Sandcroft went by the name of Whitting - they were a county family owning land in Somerset & Wales. They moved from Sandcroft when they built Uphill Grange late 1800's - now l think a nursing home - Sandcroft was it appears built over with housing subsequently. The family trace their origin to a Whiting family [pre 1762] in Mark, Somerst. See Authorised Arms by Burke p.129
