Hi all,
Looking back through the records for John Shephard Smith, bap. 13th March 1865 at Hunmanby, Yorks., I have him in all census records from 1871 to 1901.
His parents were George Smith and Sarah Anne and his sisters Mary Elizabeth (June 1863), Clara ( Dec 1866) and Emma Anne (Dec 1868), all children bap. Hunmanby.
It is the 1871 census which is intriguing me; John Shephard Smith is living with Henry Kirby and his wife Sarah Ann, (RG10/4833/159/p3) his relationship is given as 'son-in-law'. Also in the family is Emma Ann Kirby, aged 2.
Can't find Henry Kirby before 1871, nor can I find George Smith, Mary Elizabeth Smith or Clara Smith in 1871.
So, did George Smith die before 1871, Sarah remarried and Emma Jane adopted the name of Kirby; and where are Mary Elizabeth and Clara?
Anyone care to unravel this mystery?
Thanks.
Maurice

Hi, Henry and Sarah Ann are on the 81 census, with
Emma A. Kirby Daur 12 Hunmanby, York, William Kirby Son 11 Hunmanby, York, Mary H. Kirby Daur 9 S Kilvington, York,
Thomas H Kirby son 5 S Kilvington York Elizabeth E. Kirby Daur 1 Fencote, York,
It is possible from the change of birthplace that that was when the remarriage took place? I have looked for a marriage but haven't found anything yet, sorry. regards, sigrid

Hi Gill and sigrid,
Thank-you for your efforts this far, some information here for me to follow up. Presumably Hunmanby is is the Bridlington register area, so the deaths for Clara and Mary Elizabeth look strong possibilities.
Sorry sigrid, I don't have any birth/age for George Smith.
Regards,
Maurice

Hi just in case it may help, I have found the following;
Elizabeth Emily Kirby 1878 q1 Pocklington Thomas Henry Kirby 1875 q4 Thirsk Yorkshire - North Riding, Thomas Hornsey Kirby 1875 Q 1 York Mary Hannah Kirby 1872 q4 Pocklington (1837-1937)
Still can't find a marr for Henry and Sarah. You may have to go through the marriages quarter by quarter, they may have even married after they started having children, as did one of my rellies!
regards, sigrid

Hi all,
Many thanks for your help and information so far; now, if I could trouble you again ....
I have found a marriage of George Smith to Sarah Ann Shepherd in Bridlington district ( possibly Hunmanby ? ) in July/Aug/Sept 1862.
If anyone has access to the records, I would like to find George's age and name of father.
Thanks,
Maurice

Hello Maurice
There are these deaths in the Leeds Mercury for your names. Maybe they are yours.
Sarah wife of George Smith, coach builder of Doncaster, died Sept 6th, 1862 aged 52 in September 13th paper. George Henry Smith, esq, solicitor, York died in London Dec 15, 1864 aged 30 in December 24th paper.
Also there is the York BMD: http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/index.html
