Another Brick Wall To Demolish
« on: Friday 14 March 08 16:36 GMT (UK) »

Hi everyone,

I hope someone here will be able to help me, I am trying to find the marriage details of Jean Melville to William Smith, they had a son named John Melville Smith who was baptised in 1852 in Tannadice.  Jean is shown on the 1841 Census with her family,  and after that she seems to disappear... could she have married just prior to the 1851 Census... but then again I can't find her on the 1851 married to William Smith either.   She would have been 17 in 1851.

I would be most obliged if anyone can help me with this one, I have searched Scotlands People in vain, unless of course I am missing an obvious connection somewhere.

Here's hoping.

Regards

Hi Gwyn

Jean looks to be under the name Jane (interchangeable) in the 1851 census. There is a Jane Melville, 18, domestic servant b Tannadice working in the Wilson household in Dickfield Street, Arbroath Angus.

Have you found any trace of Jean and William Smith together in later censuses. I am wondering if they were actually married. What census entries have you found for son John Melville Smith?

Regards.

Hi Monica,

Thanks for that info,  it looks a good possibility.   I have found a baptist records for John Melville Smith on Scotlands People, mother Jean, father William Smith, so it appears that they were unmarried at the time of his birth.   I haven't seen any census returns for them but a relation of mine said he was told that they married in 1851, obviously he is wrong.

Masny  thanks for your help Monica, I really appreciate it.

Best wishes,

Gwyn
