SILBURN - SILBOURN

IN 1861 William Silbourne  RG9/3572 f 9 p11 states he was born Shipton abt 1834 and when he married he stated his father was a William Silburn to date I have been unable to find him in either 1851 or 1841. Surname is spelt in various ways and has been transcribed both as Tilburn and Lilburn.
Any sitings of him would be appreciated

possible. age out a bit and i do not know how close this is to shipton.

My thanks to both of the above. I hadn't thought of Sylbourn but that certainly looks like him and he is in Market Weighton
Market Weighton is about 2 miles fom Goodmanham so the 1841 could also be him. especially as he married in Goodmanham in 1854.
How the hell did you find him as he was transcribed as Scharn

i found him only because ancestry gave an alternative name of silburn.
otherwise i would have never found him.

I'm the one that set the alternative of silburn for scharn. (The correction feature in Ancestry is useful and have used it a few times).  I was searching for william silburn in the 1841 census and couldn't find him. He was in the 1851 census so checked the same address in the 1841 census and there he was with a mistranscription of the name. The rest of the family matched and you can see from the original how the name could be misinterpreted.

I read somewhere that in 1841 the census rounded the ages to the nearest 5 years. Don't know how true this is but it would explain some of the age discrepancies which tend to crop up in the 1841 census.

Hi Mike
I owe you a thank you as the William I was looking for I had in 1861 but could not find him earlier. Reading between the lines it looks as though you were looking for the elder William whilst my interest was in his eldest son William. By the way enumerators for the 1841 census were instructed to put correct age for anyone up to 15 then round down to the nearest 5 years for others so a 40 year old  could be any age between 40 and 44. However a lot of enumerators put the age as given by the head of the family

Thanks for the clarification of the 1841 census ages Tony. I think we communicated recently via Genesreunited.

I have been researching all the Yorkshire based Silburn families. I have never met a Silburn outside my close family circle so I was interested in finding about the family development.  Smiley I often get sidetracked into tracing family relationships which aren't directly in my line. I guess I just like doing the research  Roll Eyes

My line is through James Silburn c1762, a Pocklington based farmer and butcher. I haven't found the link to the rest of the Silburn clan but I reckon there is probably a common ancestor in the early 18th century.
