Hi
My 3xgreat grandfather was Ethelbert Peter Sayers, born in about 1821 in Herne Bay in Kent. According to his marriage certificates his father was Austin Sayers, a farmer. I've also seen the name recorded as Sayer, Sair, Saires and other variations.
Ethelbert or Peter as he was sometimes known, was a Grimsby fishing captain, and married his first wife in Grimsby in 1838. I have a very full picture of his life from this time, but know nothing of his origins.
Would anyone be able to check the Herne Bay parish register for a baptism about 1820? Or does anyone recognise this name, or family. Would really like to break down this brick wall.
Many thanks
Carol Hull, East Yorkshire

Hi Carol,
In case you haven't checked there is an Austin Sayer on the IGI baptised 24 June 1810 in Chislet which is only a few miles from Herne Bay.
There is also an index entry in FreeBMD for the Death of Austin Sayer aged 57 in the March Quarter of 1884, Blean District, Volume 2a, page 507. He is in the 1881 Census but mistranscribed as Austin Layer instead of Sayer, details are:
Robert GARDENER; Other; M; Male; 48; Ipswich, Suffolk, England; Master Austen LAYER; Other; W; Male; 54; Hern Bay, Kent, England; Mate Samuel POLLHILL; Other; U; Male; 21; Forkstone, Kent, England; AB Benjamine HOWELL; Other; U; Male; 32; London, Middlesex, England; AB Thomas JUTSON; Other; U; Male; 19; Margate, Kent, England; Ordy Marshal CATT; Other; U; Male; 24; Woodbridge, Suffolk, England; Ordy Errnest Afrid BEENEY; Other; U; Male; 15; Haversham, Kent, England; Appentice
Vessel "Polly" Census Place Sunderland, Durham, England Public Records Office Reference RG11 Piece / Folio 5001 / 76
Given the nautical connection a brother possibly?

Hi Paul
Thanks for this, it has given me a couple of places to start looking. I don't know Kent at all, so the information about Chislet is a help.
Yes, a possibility that the Austin you found in the 1881 census is a brother, or cousin.
thanks again
Carol
