Hi
Has anybody had access to the records of this school in Hanwell? I'm not sure if two of the children at this school belong to my gr aunt, who was a "resident" of Hanwell Asylum. I was just wondering how much information the school records would give about them, because I can't find them on the censuses either side of 1881.
I've found some sort of records on the National Archives site, but they don't really give much information. I won't be going to Kew to look at them, but would a cd be available to look at? And has anybody already bought it?

Hi Rosemary,
These records might be held at the London Metropolitan Archives.
Never seen a cd of London school records, but that doesn't mean to say there isn't one out there somewhere!
If there is one let me know; I've got lines spreading all over London.

Hi Dawn
I've e-mailed Essex Record Office about Brentwood Asylum.
The names are on the 1881 census, and are William Lawson b1871, and Jane Lawson b1868. It says they were both born in London, Middlesex. It just seems strange, especially as Jane had been transferred to Hanwell asylum the year before. It could have been the reason she went in there to start with, if her children had been placed in care, or they were put in there because of her predicament.
Maybe the records will only be the registers, but you never know. It would be lovely if you turn something up. Thank you for the offer

Hi Rosemary
Started with the Creed Register 1879-1882, neither were there
Then moved on to the Creed Register 1869-1879 and found 'William'
The page is in landscape format which won't fit across here so I've put the details down vertically, hope it makes sense
Date of Admission: 1873, Sep 11 Name: Lawson, William Age: 3 From What Union or Parish: Common Fund Religious Creed: Church of England Name of Informant: Clerk of Guardians Name and Address of Nearest Relation: Mother in service, Ratcliffe Highway Discharged or Dead: (No date entered here)
There was no sign of 'Jane', but ran out of time to check the earlier register, it's not on film, the actual register has be ordered and takes upto 40 mins to arrive. I'll check next time if you want. Let me know.
Admission registers don't survive for this institution so that's all I found for you.
Does it help?
Dawn

Hi Dawn
Thank you again for looking for me. Was this a residential school, or somewhere that they would have been dumped by mothers who couldn't manage, or be mothers who didn't want them anymore? Jane was living at a coffee shop in 1871, as a coffee shop keeper. I'm not sure if she would have been there without her children being on the census with her if she had any,
I've sent off for a copy of her record from Essex record office while she was in Brentwood Asylum (thanks for the lead ) Maybe when that comes it will give an idea of how she ended up in there in the first place.
If you have time to check Jane's record, I would appreciate it, but don't put yourself out doing it if you have other things to do. It would be lovely to connect them to her, if they are both her children, but there are heaps of William and Jane Lawsons in the area born around the same time, it would cost a fortune in certificates.
Thanks again
Rosemary

Thanks for that Dawn, there's some good reading there. Sounds like it wasn't a very nice place to be if you were a child. I can't help wondering what the William that you found today's mother was actually doing while she was 'in service' at Ratcliffe Highway. After googling the place, it sounds horrifying, and hardly a place that would have had houses with parlor-maids etc
I'll have another good look through your recommended site later, lots of info to go through.
