Peterhead Billiards 1870
« on: Tuesday 11 March 08 16:03 GMT (UK) »

Does anyone know of a billiard club that would have been operating in Peterhead around 1870.  My gggrandfather is listed as being billiard marker in the town on 1871 census.  Just wondered if any records/photos would still exist for the club??
thanks

Hi,

A few starting places for you to look:

"There are various public halls in the town for the accommodation of those who require them: a reading-room, a billiard-room, and hot and cold baths." from The New Statistical Account of Scotland (1845), Volume XII - Aberdeen,
Parish of Peterhead

So the billiard room was there for a while at least.

http://www.visitpeterhead.org.uk/familyheritage/home.htm

"The earliest Ordnance Survey maps, (1868) which comprise 16 maps, all at 1/500 scale, show magnificent detail of the town’s properties"

so on to http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/peterhead.html

You will have to view one sheet at a time, zoom in and pan around, but you might be lucky and it might show the location of the billiard room.

or they have it as one sheet here:

Good hunting!
