Bunce: whats her name??
« on: Wednesday 19 March 08 08:57 GMT (UK) »

In 1841 (Ref: HO107/1196/14, Dudley) I have a family headed by a Samuel Bunce (1791, Worcestershire).

There is a 7 year old female which "Ancestry" has interpreted as "Sary".

The best I can do is Lucy or Susy (there is a similar name in the family above the Bunces on the original).

Anybody got any better suggestions?

Hi Merc,

The fact there are several females with the same name on the page intrigues me. Susy or Lucy don't seem common enough to me to appear as often, and the first letter does look like an S. I'm wondering if it could be the enumerator's very personal interpretation of Sarah  Tongue

Sary  is a diminutive of Sarah.  Eg. the character Sarah 'Sairey' Gamp in 'Martin Chuzzlewit' .

The IGI recognises 'Sary'as a variation of Sarah - if you search for 'Sary' you will get lots of Sarahs as well.

(IGI doesn't recognise 'Sairey', which is how Dickens spelt it, but perhaps no one else did.)

Fortunately their neighbour, William Wheldon's wife who shares the mysterious first name, is still around in 1851 and is clearly Sarah.

So a version of Sarah I think it must be!
