Hi, Can anyone help, looking for info on my gr grandmother x4, Margaret Moran, born around 1815 in Kirkudbright. Her parents where Daniel Moran and Helen Bryce, they could have been Irish. She married a Walter Hill on 30/4/1835 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire. Walter was born somewhere in Ireland. Margaret died in Liberton, Edinburgh in 1835. Cheers Iain

Hello Iain,
According too the IGI - www.familysearch.org
Walter Hill and Margaret Moran had 2 children:
Helen Hill ch. 28 Aug 1836, Muirkirk, Ayr Rose Ann Hill ch. 11 June 1839, Muirkirk Ayr
Regards, Steve :O) (Just back on to the IGI - an 'all countries in the UK search from 1790 to 1830 gives no record of Daniel Moran and Helens children).

Hi Iain and Steve,
Another 3 children showing for Walter and Margaret. The IGI doesn't seem to pick up the Moran/Morn variant! Quite a big gap between Rose (1839) and Thomas (1856), so I would suspect there's another few hiding.
Thomas Hill, born 8th August 1856 Carluke - parents Walter Hill & Margaret Morn Margaret Hill, born 21st April 1860 Torphichen - parents Walter Hill & Margaret Morn Walter Hill, born 28th December 1863 Uphall - parents Walter Hill & Margt. Morn
In 1841, I see Walter Hill (25, Ireland, coal miner) lodging with the "Morian" family at Garranhill, Muirkirk. I would suspect they were relatives of Margaret. Next door are Daniel and Helen Morn.
Address: Garranhill, Muirkirk, Ayrshire Daniel Morn, m, 50, labourer, Ireland Helen ", f, 40, -, Ireland Agnes ", f, 20, -, Ireland Catherine ", f, 15, -, Ireland Susan ", f, 10, -, Ireland
Daughter (?), Agnes', age would suggest the family were still in Ireland c. 1821. How sure are you about Margaret's birthplace? Was there possibly an error on one of the censuses?

An interesting entry on the 1861:
47 Bathville Row, Bathgate, West Lothian RD 662 Ed 12 page 12
Walter Hill, 45, coal labourer, b. b. Newton Stewart, Wigtown Margaret M Hill, 31, b. Newton Stewart, Wigtown Agnes, 20, b.Auchenleck,Ayrshire John, 18, b. Carluke, Lanark Janet, 12,b. ?, Ayr Eliza, 10, b. Carluke, Lanark James, 7, b. Carluke, Lanark Thomas, 4, b. Linlithgow Margaret, 11 months, b. Bathgate
I think it's the same family.
I thought Newton Stewart was in Minnigaff, KKD

Hi Iain
Don't believe all you see on censuses. Many of our ancestors changed their ages, places of birth, etc. It could have been memory, mis-interpreting the question (place of birth could be put down as where they could first remember, etc.), deliberate misleading or a range of reasons , even wrongly copied by the enumerator.
Have you found them on the 1871?
I'll go check anyway
Gadget
Added - looks like Walter died before 1871 - do you have any details on him - death cert, etc.

To re-inforce my previous comment about census information:
I've just been looking for young Thomas' birth reg (aged 4 and b. Linlithgow on the 1861). He was born August 8th 1856 in Mayfield Cottage, Carluke. parents - Walter Hill, ironstone miner and Margaret, m.s. Morn.

Margaret is down as married rather than a widow, so where is Walter

Hi Gadget Sorry about that,i must have typed it without my glasses on. Margaret died around 1885, in Liberton,Midlothian. I think the real fun will start when i try to trace the Irish records, i've been told that they are quite difficult to check. I have a few branches that all i have is names and, born Ireland. Any tips on where the best place to start researching them. You did a couple of look ups for me in the Midlothian section under Donaldson/Brown, since then i've managed to trace the Allan family to Belfast / County Down areas.
Cheers Iain

Not very good on Ireland, Iain I know that it's best to know the County and townland.
I've found Walter's death in Liberton:
3rd August 1879, aged 63, formerly a coachman , married to Margaret Moran. Parents - Arthur Hill, gardener and Elizabeth, m.s. Stewart, both deceased.
I'll go have another look for Margaret.

Hi Gadget, Thanks for your time you spent looking up the info, it adds a lot more info to that branch of the family. But, not having any luck with Daniel Moran, evan on 'Scotlandspeople' under different spellings of the surname. Looks like the Moran's are another brick in my Irish wall, along with the Allan, Duffy, Christie and the Hill families.
Cheers Iain
