Monteath/MacAra
« on: Sunday 16 March 08 00:59 GMT (UK) »

I have been tracing Matilda MacAra (nee Monteath & married to Niel) with a little help from this site - which was much appreciated. But now I need help again. Matilda can be found on the 1861 census under her maiden name. I cannot find her in the 1871 census under either name, nor can I find her in the death records (under either name). I also went looking for son William under the 1871 census & he doesn't appear there under Perth or other counties. Any suggestions Huh

Hi, I've been reading your McAra postings with interest.
I have in my posession a bible that has been passed down in my family. It has an inscription inside which reads "Elizabeth McAra, Braco village, May 18th 1862". I also have another book with Matilda McAra, May 29th 1851 written inside. It is a copy of Perfect Peace which seems to be a collection of religious letters.
The books have been passed down in my family but I dont know how they connect. From your postings I think that your Elizabeth McAra, child of Neil the surgeon and Mathilda is the same one as mine. The dates and ages are about right.
My family are all from Adelaide in South Australia. My GG Grandmother was May Fewster Born in 1897 in Hindmarsh, South Australia. Her parents were Sarah Eliza Beams and Edwin Fewster. Sarah's father was James Beams, but I know nothing of her mother. I wonder if her mother was Elizabeth McAra?
This information fits with an emigration of the McAra's around the 1870's and would explain why they cannot be found in UK records at a later time.

Can anyone help with further info?

That is amazing!  Matilda's husband was buried in Braco. I'm sure it must be the same family.  Elizabeth's sister Jane emigrated to Victoria (Australia) & married a Peter Rigby - and my husband is a descendant.   Smiley

I have just done a search on the SA burials website and there is a record of Matilda McAra in the 5/6/1896 government gazette. Not sure if this would be Matilda senior or junior?

You're doing well! A general search of SA records came up with nothing for me.  I might check that one out. Thanks.

Ozziekerri I have some information for you.  The Matilda mentioned in the SA government gazette is the daughter, as she died a single woman at the age of 62.  James Beames was a widower when he married Elizabeth McAra on March 2, 1874.  He was 37 and Elizabeth was 28.  Groom's father was also James Beames.  Hope this fills some gaps.
