I have been reading the Penman / Izate topic on the Perth board and because I am researching PENMAN too but starting in Stirlingshire I thought I'd start mine on this board
Michael PENMAN married Mary BAUCHOP in Clackmannan but he was baptised in the parish of Airth, Stirlingshire on 27th May 1781. His parents were Robert PENMAN and Jean MUIRHEAD. On 27th January 1767 the Airth register baldly states that 'Robert Penman and Jean Muirhead were married'.
Using the IGI, their childrens names were:- Janet, Agnes, Catharine, Ann, Elizabeth and two Michaels. All of them were submitted except the last - my - Michael (1781). All including this Michael were baptised at Airth. The first Michael was baptised in the yaer 1777 in Clackmannan. I have not yet tried to confirm whether any'all of them are in the OPR.
Again using the IGI there appear to be six possible sets of parents for Robert - based on whether he was 15 or up to 38 years of age when he married Jean MUIRHEAD. Some may be more or less likely because of where he (Robert) was married. For example, one marriage was in Roxburghshire. But still . . . .
On the Perman/Izats topic already referred to I see a couple of those parents referred to as having a son Robert. I must study those in more detail together with trying to find the children of the other four potential parents of Robert.
In the meanwhile any details or thoughts that may occur to those reading this posting will be very much appreciated. If you can add anything regarding Mary BAUCHOP and Jean MUIRHEAD, that too would be helpful.
I may have something useful for Penmans who haven't got back as far as the above. Michael PENMAN and Mary BAUCHOP had several children one of whom was William who married Janet SIM / SYME (Innverkeithing, Fife).
Their daughter married Charles HOGG at Bothkennar, Stirling in 1878. They are buried at Plean.

Hi there, I'm the other Penman researcher on the Perth Board. I did a check on Scotland's People for you as I had a few credits left over. These are the possible parents for your Robert:

There are a number of Michael Muirhead's in and about the Falkirk/Larbert area. That is where I think the name "Michael" came from. I have never seen that name in my family tree. It's very un-Scottish amongst all the Roberts/Williams/Alexanders etc.

Hi Reiver,
Re your ancestors buried at Plean - have you been to Plean Churchyard and seen the stone?
The only one I can find amongst my records is this one:
Erected by his children in memory of their father CHARLES HOGG Died here September 20th 1886 aged 60 years CHARLES HOGG son of Charles Hogg Senior died at Govan Road July 14th 1888 aged 9 years CHARLES HOGG Junior died at East Plean on January 7th 1912 aged 59 years Also CHRISTINA WHITE wife of the above Charles Hogg Senior Died at East Plean on 7th October 1913 aged 79? years
Is this the correct Charles Hogg and if so, was his wife Christina White Penman? Or am I looking at the wrong family altogether?
If you'd like photos of the above stone, send me a POM with your personal e-mail address.
Anne

I see that there are a couple of replies to my initial posting. As it was rather long I'll now do two shorter replies . The first in response to Colliersbairn.
Many many thanks for your look ups on ScotlandsPeople. It is much appreciated. This obviously confirms the IGI extracted details. What I must do is endeavour to find children of those Robert Penman marriages and compare the names with those of Robert Penman / Jean Muirhead - after finding Jean Muirhead's parents and doing the same
Again thanks for your help. I was wondering whether to purchase one of the local MI extract booklets? I'm reluctant to buy several if none have Penmans. Any advice?

Thank you Anne for the info about Charles Hogg / Christine White at Plean.
Many years ago when my daughter was at Stirling University - 25 or so years - I drove over to Plean. I had never been there before. I knew though that it was associated with my grandmother who had died in the 1960s. But she lived and had lived since she was married in the early 1900s in Northumberland. Her maiden name was Hogg.
The memorial that you mention, if I remember correctly, is just outside the door to the church on the left. I noted down the inscription.
It was only about 6 months ago when I decided to start on grandmother's family that two and two definitely made four
The two Charles Hoggs were my grandmother's father and grandfather. Christina White was her grandmother. My g/mother's second name was White - no doubt after her.
Back to the main topic The younger Charles Hogg married Christine Penman, great granddaughter of Robert, he who married Jean Muirhesd.
Thank you very much for the offer of the photo but I have the inscription and I'm not wanting to build up my photograph collection at this stage.
My regards Reiver

Regarding purchasing MI booklets. It's a hard decision. I can honestly say that my Penman ancestors did have headstones in Bothkennar churchyard (1800's). It depends on the family circumstances. I tried to find Penman headstones in Airth which would be the 1700's and didn't realize there are two churches. I think I was looking in the more recent one and couldn't find anything. I also imagine it would depend on how often you moved around. As you get back in the 1700's too, the headstones actually just had initials. One of my family just had W.J. E.C. and if it weren't for the fact that the next generation were buried in the same spot and had their proper names carved in, I wouldn't have known it was them. Actually the W.J. was William Izatt.

Just been doing a quick look through my material - certificates and censuses - on my Penmans for location. I have them from Robert P and Jean Muirhead who married in 1767 in Airth, Stirling. Son etc were in and about Clackmannan - places like Linmill and Vennel occur - till the 1850s/1860s. From the 1860s to the 1890s - and beyond? -West Mains, Bothkennar occurs mostly.
There is one place I have not been able to positively transcribe and that is in the Parish of Logie. It reads (to me anyway) Haugh of B. . . . Grange. What should it be please?
As it is in Airth where I've reached for Robert and Jean I suppose I should consider looking at the local MIs for that area.
