Nottingham cemeteries

Hi,
This is a bit morbid, but I was just wondering where people were buried if they lived in the parishes of St Mary, St Nicholas and St Peter from 1650-1850 as they are big churches right in the town centre!
I've got many ancestors from St Mary's and St Nicholas and I doubt their headstones are still around but I was just wondering?

All these churches had their own burial ground Burto  but can't help you with what remains of them (no pun intended!)

hi burto,

i can remember wandering around st. mary's churchyard some years ago.  many of the grave stones that had originally been horizontal, had been placed upright around the walls. they appeared to be intact and cared for.

st. peters is, if i remember correctly a much smaller churchyard and has been encroached on by the neighbouring marks and spencer store.  but again i think there were grave stones present, although a much smaller number.

the other two cemeteries that jane mentioned, the rock and general are well stocked and in general well cared for. so you may well be lucky with your quest.

Burto,
Certainly worth having a look.
St.Mary's I believe used the main burial ground at St.Mary's, plus Bellar Gate and Barker Gate (if you contact Nottingham Archives they will tell you). Some folk are alos buried in the Cholera Burial Ground.
I found my husband's ancestors who were buried  at St.Mary's between 1790 and 1838. The stone was covered in moss, but I managed to clean it up enough to make out the inscription.  The churchwarden was very helpful. Also, don't forget to look inside the church - there are lots of stones making up the floor.
St.Peter's have a booklet for sale inside the church which gives some memorials. As one of the rootschatters mentioned there are not too many left in the churchyard.
St.Nic's (as it is known today) were also very helpful, and sent me a list of the gravestones in the churchyard. Just ring the church office on 0115 9524600

Hope this encourages you to have a look - you might be surprised!
Good luck.
