Does anyone know where I could possibly search for a record of a conversion from C of E to the Catholic church? My GG grandfather was from Levisham in Nth Yorks and baptised in the local anglican church but when he married, it was in Catholic ceremony in Whitby. I'm not sure which of the couple had converted but would love to find out more!
Often people converted because their (future) spouse was a Catholic & the church did not, then, permit 'mixed' marriages. Try the Whitby RC parish records - the groom may have been 'conditionally' baptised before being received. Or there should be a record of his joining the church. Otherwise contact the RC parish in his home town- the records are as good as the CofE ones (or should be )
