Bridgnorth help please !
« on: Thursday 27 March 08 12:49 GMT (UK) »

Hi there,
Can anyone in the Bridgnorth area help with this one ?

I am doing some research on a man named John Lane of Bridgnorth - this is his funeral report from the local newspaper -

'Court Shakespeare, No. 4304, A.O.F. has recently lost by death two of its members, namely William Leith and John Lane.........On Monday John Lane,
aged 35, also a member of Court Shakespeare was interred in the Bridgnorth
cemetery. The deceased who died very suddenly theprevious Saturday was in
the employ of W. Burton and sons, pork butchers and grocers. The Rev. J.
Parkes, Wesleyan Minister, committed the body to the grave and the Foresters' Address was read by Bro Price.

Anyone any idea what is Court Shakespeare and Foresters was ??
The only thing I can think of is a Pub called "The Shakespeare !!!!!
Any advice much appreciated Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley

I think you might find this is the Ancient Order of Forresters -  along the same lines as the Masons or Buffaloes, I think.

Perhaps they call their groups "Courts" as the Masons have Chapters and the Buffaloes "Lodges "

There's quite a bit on Google ...
