Nicknames for all COE Families

I wonder if someone knows why all COE families in and around Desborough have/had nicknames to distinguish one family from another, and who started the whole process? Apparently my side had the nickname " Budgie"! I only found this out about 2 years ago, and it has intrigued me ever since.
