I have a puzzle........
« on: Tuesday 18 March 08 11:23 GMT (UK) »

There's something I noticed whilst researching my maternal great x4 grandmother and was just wondering if there was any connection to her.

She is visiting friends or family (not sure which) in 1851 with her daughter. Now also in the house is a Daniel Mitchell and I was wondering who he was. He is only 6 years old and his relationship is listed as a visitor. The census reads as follows;

130 Gedney Dyke

William Tukes      Head  M  67
Frances Tukes     Wife   M  57
William Noble       Son    U  28
William Noble        SIL    U  34
Ann Noble             DIL    U  27
Daniel Mitchell   Visitor 6 Holbeach
Modesty Lambert  Visitor U 30  Ag lab  Holbeach
Jane Lambert  Visitor 4  Holbeach

Now Modesty is my 4x great grandmother and Jane my 3x great grandmother. I know that Jane was born out of wedlock with the father's surname being Hill but I wondered whether Daniel could also be another illegitimate child of Modesty's? It just seems strange that a 6 year old child who doesn't seem to be a relative is visiting a house without his mother.

I have been unable to find Daniel anywhere else.

Anyone able to help with this puzzle and see if Daniel is a possible 4x great uncle?

Thank you

Been and had a look and it certainly does look like Mitchell and he would have been 16 in 1861. I guess he's not a relative then.

Hi Meggiemoo

Quite interesting to see that Daniel is an apprentice to a bricklayer!

Do you know what you 4 x Great Uncles profession was - or was it just that Daniel would have been a 4 x Great Uncle if he was related?

Just nosey curious Grin

I meant that Daniel would have been the 4x great Uncle had he have been Modesty's son.

I understand, thanks; I wonder whose son the young man was then?

Perhaps he and his brother were orphaned or fostered and ended up with the Wilkinsons.

Nice side story though! Smiley

Heres the marriage, so either Maria was married before to a Mitchell or the children were illegitimate -

Marriage -
Joseph Wilkinson and Maria Mitchell Holbeach Dec 1857 Vol 7a Page 697

I did wonder if the name was wrong and that it was Williamson rather than Wilkinson because the neighbours of the house where Daniel was visiting, the mother had been a Williamson before marrying the father.

It does make you wonder who the 2 boys parents were, although it does say 'son' as the relationship on the returns. Maybe they were Maria's via an affair?  Who knows?

Whoops!

I guess the children are a mixture - some Maria's, some Joseph's and some by both.
