From FamilySearch; Family Group Record:
1.
Roger Wright married Sarah Linsey on 20 Nov 1797 in Leake, Yorkshire
Batch No:M040551, dates: 1809-1878, Source Call no: 0550536/0550537,
Printout Call No. 6909962

2. Roger Wright married Sarah Linsaly on 20 Nov 1797 in Leake, Yorkshire
Batch No: M040552, 1571-1809, 0550536, 6909963.

Both are extracted records, so it's two interpretations of the same entry....bad hand-writing springs to mind!  Are you near enough to an LDS centre to order the film and have a look yourself?

The only other LINSEY/LINSLAY/LINSLEY marriage in Leake on the 2 batches you mention is for a Mary LINSLEY in 1853, and there don't seem to be any LINS(L)EY christenings there at all, so that's no help.  Huh

Can you enter one of the surnames and indicate the other as a alternative spelling/aka until you find which it is?

Hallo  Rambler,

thanks for your post - unfortunately I am on the continent so no possibility of visiting LDS centre.

You mention entering one of the surnames with the other as alternative.  Where would I do this?

Viv

P.S: Misspellt the second name myself - should read Linslay  Grin

Hi

I'm going to be at North Yorks Archives tomorrow.  If I get a minute I will check the Parish Register for you.

Hi Susan,

that would be just great  -  then I know I am on the right track.

Thanks in anticipation   Smiley   But really, only if you have time - I know there are not enough hours in the day for one's own  research.

I use Family Tree Maker software which has an option for alternative spellings/name changes, and I think other programs probably have similar possibilities - the computer equivalent of writing it in pencil with a note in the margin!

But hopefully Susan will have time to check the name for you and make everything clear....  Smiley

Hi Viv
The reason for the two names is that the Curate wrote her name as Linsey and Sarah signed her own name as Linsley.

I copied it out for you:

Banns of marriage between Roger Wright
& Sarah Linsey both of Crosby in the
Parish of Leke were lawfully published
on the three following Sundays viz
on the 5th, the 12th & 19th Days of
Novr 97  by me E Greenwood  Curate

Roger Wright & Sarah Linsey were married
on the 20th day of Novr 1797 by me
             E Greenwood  Curate
This marriage was                    Roger Wright
solemnized between us            Sarah Linsley

In the presence of us  Thos Lowther
                                    Joseph Wright
                                    John Thirsk (?)

Bride, groom and witnesses all signed their own names.  I am not absolutely certain that the third witness was named Thirsk but that is what it looked like.

I had a look in the transcribed index for Leake to see if there were any other Linsey/Linsleys to see if it would clarify things, but there was no other mention of either version of the name.

Hope this is useful anyway.

Hi Susan,

THANKS A BUNCH  Grin

That is a great help - one of the witnesses was his brother - which shows me that I have also found the whole family through the  FamilySearch site.

Happy Easter
