Change of Occupations
« on: Tuesday 18 March 08 16:10 UTC (UK) »

On a marriage certificate i have Louisa Anderson whose father is described as a James Anderson, occupation is "Mat Maker".

This is a 'poor' family living in the Bethnal Green area. I have found her married in various census returns and pinned her down to a birth area.

When pursuing her line back through the census returns i have found the only person who fits the bill ie. name, age, area, and name of father............ theonly thing that i can't get past in my mind in accepting this as the right person is that the fathers occupation is "Clog Maker" not "Mat Maker."  In every census return he is a "Cog Maker" even in the census the same year as the aforementioned marriage. The marriage was in June, perhaps mat making and clog making were seasonal occupations.

Does anyone have any opinions on my mental block.

Hi 243rose

Welcome to Rootschat Cheesy

It is very interesting the variety of professions a person can go through in a lifetime.

One of my ancestors was a fisherman/pilot/joiner so they probably did anything to help feed the family at that time.

James Anderson may have been both a mat maker and a clog maker.  It may have depended on if he could afford the materials/tools to make clogs?

I remember my grandmother 'making mats' although she called them 'rag rugs' where old bits of clothes and rags were torn into strips and knotted onto a bit of sacking or hessian. they made great mats!

I think that as a poor family he would have turned his hand to anything, so if all the other details fit I would not worry too much about his 'profession'.

Su.

Thanks for that.
My gut feeling is that this is the correct family........... it's just that constant occupations are kind of comforting. I've had a Tailor go to a Baker and back to a Tailor again bt in that instance i knew i had the right person.
Perhaps if i just accept that this is the correct family and delve a little deeper something else to corroborate may turn up.

Have you ever had one or more marriages for the same person where the name of the given Father is not the same.
I wonder how many errors were made in this way.

Thanks
Ian

Hi Ian

Welcome to Rootschat Cheesy

As long as everything else fits then I would not have any particular problem with the occupation anomaly. You need to make sure you have as much info as you can find on the family to make sure you have the right man. One of mine appears as a Cattle Dealer on his son's marriage cert but on every other occasion he is an Inn Keeper - everything I have on the family confirms him as the right person.

Jan.

Thanks for the advice.
this has been bothering me for 10+ years.
when i ordered the certificate years ago because as it was the only one that fitted exactly and the fathers name came back as James i suppose i should have just accepted it.

'Chuckle' 243 rose Grin

A g g grandmother of mine was married three times and had four different surnames! (And lord knows how many children!)

A daughter of a ggg grandfather started live as Catherine and ended up as Anthanna!

Names and Professions and especially ages come and go like the wind, it is very difficult to take anything you read as fact, you as the researcher have to select the pieces and try and see if you can put them together.

I have found that it is five parts information and five parts instinct!

We are not always right, but that makes it all very interesting Cheesy

Your skills will be most appropriate for research then! Wink

If everything else is there then go with it - have you checked out the gravestones at all?  Sometimes Fathers and sons/daughters can be all buried together or plots side by side and this will give clues too.

People dont change much over the decades and they all tend to follow similar patterns so just keep looking for those.

Happy Hunting

I don't think you should have just accepted it Ian. I always think it best to look for as much evidence as possible. Go with your gut-feeling and look for things to back it up, but be prepared to  prove yourself wrong if necessary  Grin

Hi Iain

I've only ever ordered certificates from

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

I've never had any problems. Last time I ordered it was £7.50, but if you enter references eg father's name they will check these and only charge you £3 if it isn't the right cert.

Order your certs here Iain

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

You will have to register first time round, but it only takes a few minutes and all certs costs £7 from them.If you aren't 100% sure you have the right person, add a reference checking point such as fathers name or approx age or something and if the facts don't tie up they won't produce a cert but will refund you £3.

Hope that helps.

Carol

Iain

Who are the witnesses to the marriage, are there any clues in the address, is it near a census date?

Where are the couple(with kids?) in later censuses.Any clues as to what they named their kids, after grandparents maybe?

All various points we use to double check that we have found the right person.

Carol.

thanks for yr reply.
In the 1871 and 1881 census she says she is born in Middlesex, 1891 census she states she was born in Shoreditch and in 1901 in Clerkenwell. She states her age as 18, 28, 38 and 51. On her marriage certificate she states that she is 'Full age'.
She was married in Bethnall Green in June 1870 to Henry BATES a Painter who was from south of the water.
They had their 1st child Louisa in April 1870 2 months before they were married. On the birth certificate they gave details as if they were married already. They were living in the Walworth area of London at the time which was where her husbands family were from.
The witnesses for the marriage were an Emma EDWARDS and a William KEYLE, on Ancestry.co.uk there are no exact matches for William KEYLE in the 1871 census and too many Emma EDWARDS.

in 1851 there is a Louisa Anderson registered in Islington
in 1852 a Laura Anderson registered in Stepney which could have been transcribed incorrectly.
in 1852 a Louisa Anderson registered in Holborn which is the on that i have.
in 1853 a Louisa Margaret Anderson registered in Bethnal Green

i found a Louisa M Anderson in the 1871 census born Hackney whose father was William. i kind of took this for the one above so have never obtained this certificate.

Anyway.
I would be interested to hear your views/advice.

Iain.

Iain

I'm confused  Roll Eyes

You say Louisa married Mr Bates in June 1870 in Bethnal Green,so why would you be looking to find a Louisa M Anderson on the 1871 census 9 mths later?

Her name would be Mrs Henry Bates surely?

Not that I can find them in 1871 with baby Louisa under that surname.

I agree that Keyle is not a usual sort of name,is it possible that you've misread it? And also agree that Emma Edwards is just a non starter to try and link up at this stage. Although I wonder if she is Louisa's sister or just her friend?

Will look again later....but in the meantime get that cert !!!

Yeah it's a pain in the a*** that they closed the FRC eh?

We'll all wasted time looking backwards at the wrong tree only to find a cert shows us the correct line to go down. Wink

Regards

Carol
