Mary Agnes Bell (Ewart)
« on: Tuesday 18 March 08 16:50 GMT (UK) »

My Gt Grandmother married Robert Gordon in 1872 at Dornock, Dumfriesshire.
In the 1881 Census she is 29 years old which makes her birthdate about 1851-2.
I cannot find any other details of her life because she seems to use different combinations of her names.
Does anyone know of her and where she fits into the family.

Thank you,
Pauline

Hi Pauline

What names show for her parents on her 1872 marriage cert? Also father's occupation might help in trying to find them.

Regards.

Hello Monica,
Thank you for replying so quickly.
In 'Scotlands People' I found the details I have given you but there was no mention of her parents or his occupation. Am I looking at the record wrongly?

Hi Pauline

Did you look at the actual cert (image) of the marriage or the search results with the basic info ie Names and place of marriage? If you have looked at the actual certficate and her parents' details are blank...that makes things a bit more tricky!

Smiley There are submitted entries on IGI from the marriage cert for Mary Agnes and Robert Gordon. As I suspected, it looks likely that her birth was illegitimate:

MARY AGNES BELL  Parents: Mother: AGNES EWART
Marriages: Spouse: ROBERT GORDON
Marriage:  12 NOV 1872  Dornock, Dumfries, Scotland
Husband Age at Marriage: 26
Wife Age at Marriage:     21

So, as you can see, the name EWART was her mother's maiden name and BELL would seem to be the surname of her father.

Details for Robert Gordon, also from the same entry on IGI:

ROBERT GORDON
Parents:Father: PETER GORDON Mother: ELIZABETH MINTO
Marriages:Spouse: MARY AGNES BELL
Marriage: 12 NOV 1872  Dornock, Dumfries, Scotland
Husband Age at Marriage: 26
Wife Age at Marriage:  21

The actual entry on SP actually shows as :

ROBERT GORDON     Marriages:Spouse:  MARY AGNES BELL EWART

Father's surname might actually not be so clear  Roll Eyes  Someone has been retracing your steps already.  Also on IGI is the following entry which would fit for Agnes Ewart, mother to Mary Agnes:

AGNES BELL EWART  Christening:  03 APR 1830 Dornock, Dumfries, Scotland
Parents:JOHN EWART and AGNES BELL

I wonder if the Robert Gordon and Mary Agnes's first child John E. Gordon stands for John EWART Gordon? You then had in order:

Peter - Robert's father
Elizabeth - Robert's mother
Agnes - Mary Agnes's mother

There are enough dates and names there for you to hopefully be able to verify the information.  Bear in mind also that if Agnes Ewart was only c. 22 when daughter Mary Agnes was born, it is likely that she may have married and daughter Mary Gordon may not show under EWART but under mother's married name in the critical censuses.  With the Gordon's move to Cumberland following their marriage, it makes it harder to identify where Mary Agnes was born in Scotland.

Regards.

One marriage that might be worth following up is this one:

AGNES EWART  Marriages:Spouse: JAMES MARSHALL
Marriage: 29 MAY 1855  Graitney, Dumfries, Scotland

This looks like them in 1861:

James Marshall    26, ploughman, b. Gretna, Dumfriesshire
Agnes Marshall    30, b. Dornock
John Marshall    5
Thomas Marshall 3
Ellen Marshall    1

Address: Glencartholm, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire

If this is the right entry for mother Agnes....where is Mary Agnes I wonder?

Thank you for your help.  I've printed out the marriage from Scotlands People.
Now I need to find Peter Gordon and Elizabeth Minto's marriage and I can't so far. I've been to look at possible graveyeards without much success - ploughmen probably didn't have headstones!
I have to rest between searches as I get so muddled and irritated when I draw blanks.
Anyway, thanks again. Pauline
