Whitehaven. Andersons Cake Shop
« on: Tuesday 18 March 08 19:10 GMT (UK) »

I have information that my Grandmother used to be "In Service" or work at Andersons Cake shop in Whitehaven. I am thinking she would have been about 14years old and about 1913/14. I would be interested if anyone has any information about this business or could tell me where in Whitehaven it was.  Many thanks  Lincsbabe. Grin

Hi Lincsbabe.

I wasn't around when your grandmother was in service, but if it's the bakery I'm thinking of, it was still around when I was growing up and it was in King Street.  We used to go in.  I don't think I've got anything with it in here, but someone may.  Or wht about the 1901 census?  It may have been on, even if your grandmother wasn't.

Best wishes

The 1914 Kelly's Directory has

ATKINSON, Jessie Isabella (Miss) confctnr, 17 Lowther St

(same entry in 1910 Directory)

I think it true to say that Lowther St was the best street in town.

One cannot always rely on street numbering being consistent, but in 1901, 17 Lowther St was the home of Thomas HANNAH, Draper.
