Hi,
After extensive searching, I am unable to locate my great grandfather George William Calver on the 1881 census.
He was born in 1859 in Burton Pudsey (?Pidsey, ?Pidsea) - Pudsey is given on the 1901 Census. (Patrington 3rd.Q 3d/227)
He married Sarah Jane Mortimer in 1885 and became a police constable in the area.
Being about 21 at the time of the 1881 census he may have been out of the country. Is it possible to locate his where-abouts and parents names on the 1861 and 1871 censuses please!

Hi Jo,
Many thanks for that super work, hope you had a good nights sleep ...
I managed to find the marriage of George CA(R)VER to Eliza Medforth: Patrington 9d/449 4th.Q 1857 This seems to fit quite well except for the transcription errors, even the page No. was given as 44(7,9)
Looks like a few transcription errors with the christening as well, but it fits with the registration, Patrington 1959 3rd.Q 9d/227
Wattle Norfolk and Nattley Suffolk, I guess are Watton Norfolk, more transcription errors ...
I found the death of George Calver in FreeBMD, died aged 74, 1904 Patrington 1st.Q 9d/206 but couldn't find Eliza, she must have died post 1920.
I still can't find George William Calver in the 1881 census, I've tried all the variations I can think of as well as the soundex. Perhaps he went on a skiing holiday to Switzerland ...

Jo, how did you do that ....
I can't understand how I could have missed him! I even tried various forms of handwriting in an attempt to see what possible transcription errors there might have been! I thought Calver would be an "easy" name to research, but I haven't come across so many errors before!
A police constable, eh! That's a big step up from the ag labourers, paupers, plough boys, servants, etc. that comprise the rest of my families roots ...
Again, many thanks for all that, and best wishes.
