I recently found in 1880 editions of the Derby Mercury two mentions of Walter Wragg, licensed victualler, of Kilbourn.
I can't find him in the 1881 census and would be very grateful if someone could look for him in 1871 and 1891.
Many thanks forest

Do you have any idea of his age, as this is not much to go on.

Many thanks Patrish - the Walter in 1871 is too young but very interesting because of his birthplace. The one I am looking for would probably have been born about or before 1832, so would be roughly 40 in 1871 but could well have come from Shirland. I believe he was the father of my husband's illegitimate ggrandfather - the child's mother was born in Alfreton in 1831/2. I've come up with numerous Wragg families in Derbyshire but this is the first Walter I've found anywhere. Now I'm wondering whether the one in the 1871 census was named after his father? Could I ask you please to see whether he appears in 1851/1861?

There does not appear to be a male Wragg b c1830/32 Kilbourn or Shirland anywhere on the 71 census.
Do you know he was definitely alive then.
No death appearing on the free bmd.

Thank you so much for your efforts Patrish. I think I've drawn a blank here again. I was so hoping Walter's father would also have been a Walter.
My husband's ggrandfather, as I said, was illegitimate. He was born 1851 and by the time he married he had inserted the names Walter Wragg between his own first and surname. His mother didn't marry a Wragg but a Harrison, so no help there.
I'll just have to keep watching IGI and FreeBMD and perhaps he'll appear one of these days.
Thanks again.

I can see what you mean, so there was no actual fathers name on his marriage cert or was it just Harrison as illegitimate children very often "invented" a fathers name for propriety's sake.

That's right - no father's name on the birth certificate but his step-father named as father on the marriage cert.
