On my grandmother's birth certificate of 1880 in Hanstown, her father Michael Allen of Mullingar is described as a 'steward'.  Does anyone know if this is this likely to be a domestic servant or an employee of a large estate? Or something completely different?

Many thanks

Hi Josey,

I think Michael Allen may have been a Land Steward on an estate.

Thanks, Christopher.

Was the land steward the equivalent of the 'manager' or factor as they are called in Scotland? Or were stewards underlings of a manager? Do you know if there is a resource I can research that may give the names of possible estates in the area?

Hi Josey,

Yes ... land stewards were managers or factors.

Try googling "landed gentry Westmeath" ... that may produce some estates for you.
