Sailed into New York in 1949
« on: Wednesday 19 March 08 11:52 GMT (UK) »

I am interested in a ship called The America which left Southampton on 4th May 1949. Aboard was 31 year old mum Phyllis McGuire and her 5 year old daughter and an 11 year old McGuire girl who we have no idea about  Grin

The 5 year old had been a bridesmaid for my friends parents just a few weeks before.

Is there any way to check what happened to these three- I imagine as mum was so young she married in the US at some stage?

I've tried the Ellis Island website but it only goes up to 1924.

Many thanks to anyone who can help me here.

Does the full passenger record show any details of who she was going to live with and whereabouts in the USA?  There are no available census records for that period

Was she a single parent at that time?

Does it show any relationship between Phyllis and the 11 year old

Is the address at the time of embarkation the same for the 11 year old as that of Phyllis and the 5 year old?

Have you checked for a birth record on the GRO index for the 11 year old as that would give her mothers maiden name

HI Carole

Thanks for your reply.

This is a very complicated family- at least two of whom may still be alive today.
So don't want to go into too much detail. But no mum wasn't single. Wink

All the ships lists this side shows is the address they were living at,which of course we know !

My friends mum is just curious to know what happened to them in the US.

I've now had a second look at the passenger list and think that the 11 year old is in fact an 11 MONTH old.She is listed as an infant and named after the other two.

But it just says 11 in the column and not months weeks or years  Grin

We knew nothing of a baby in 1949 though...odder and odder !

I have searched on Ancestry for her and can't come up with her on any passenger lists. I have tried different things to find the ship and wonder how long it would take to get to New York. The closest I could come up with was the America reaching New York July 6, 1949. Would that be the right one? If it is, I will go through the passenger list page by page and look for her, but it seems like it shouldn't have taken 2 months to cross.  Huh

I think I found them on another passenger list two years later. There is Phyllis, two girls, one 7 and one 3 and a boy, 1. Let me PM you with their names.

Sorry Kath I haven't been notified yet that you'd replied on this thread.
My provider has a habit of sending me a job lot of Rootschat notifications overnight.

As you know by now through our PM's ,you have indeed found the right family.

And not only that but their deaths, in Gaithersburg Montgomery Phyllis's as recently as last October.

Thanks so much for all your hard work.

Fingers crossed that the library can find the obit and will email me it Wink

All the best
