and here they are in 1901

Mary J Mills     48     Wife                                                  Darton
William  Mills   49     Head            Innkeeper Pub             Tipton, Staffs
Thomas Mills   13     Son                                                   Ardsley
Edith McKrley  24     servant        General domestic          Ardsley

31 New Street Barnsley

I don't know why they changed their places of births, especially the children's from the 1881 to the 1891 as Hoyle Mill and Darfield are a couple of miles apart.  Mary also changes hers from Higham to Darton, again with a distance of a couple of miles between the two.

Its interestng to see Williams career change too.

Jen and Yonder,

you guys are great!! thanks you so much for all this new info.

So if James Shirt Chapman is Ellen Chapman's son I wonder which Shirt was the father.

I also wonder what happened to George & Ellen in the 1881 census, Agnes & Elizabeth are with James Chapman and Arthur is with Mary Jane. I haven't been able to find any death index records yet.

Can anyone suggest how I go about finding the William Mills born 1851/1852 in Dudley Park/Tipton Staffs?

Thanks again people,

Ian

Hi Ian.

I think that this could be William Mills as a baby  with his mum and dad in 1851

William Mills     25                   Head      Labourer     Tipton, Staffs
Ann Mills          23                   wife                              "          "
William Mills     10 months      son                               "          "

yes it was Tipton.

Im trying to find a birth for him, but Im not sure what district Tipton came under so Im asking around. Bear with me  and hopefully I will find which is his as there were quite a few William Mills born in Staffs at that time.

The 1851 census was taken on 31st March.  William is down as being 10 months old so he would have been born in May/ June 1850. The registration district was Dudley and I can only see one birth  although it is in the July August September quarter. It may be him, the only way to know for sure is to send off for the certificate.

the number is        18      342

I've just had a look on Familysearch.org.uk and there is a William Mills who was Christened on 30th June 1850 at St Martin's ipton. Parents William and Ann. I think he might be yours.
The batch number is c394643

Have you tried family search or freebmd for any info?  You might be able to find William and Mary Janes marriage on freebmd.

Both sites are free to use.

Jen,

thank you for those lookups. Yes, I use FreeBMD, Family Search and various other sites when I can afford it; the dollar exchange rate is prohibitive for me at the moment so I am trying to be as sure of people as possible before ordering certificates.

I believe William and Mary Jane's marriage was this one:

Marriage Index Q4 1872 Barnsley 9c 261
William Mills to Mary Jane Goodare

The Goodare/Goodair/Gooder/Goodyear surname changes have made things tricky and I was stumbling with William Mills because I couldn't find the census entries that you have to give me a possible place of birth.

Thanks again for all your work,
Ian

no problem.
If there is anything else that you need looking up on ancestry just ask, I don't mind.

I shall probably be going to the archives in Barnsley in the next month or two, so if you can hang on that long I will have a look at the parish records for that wedding and find out which church and who the witnesses were and also if Williams father was William c1826

Ive been trying to find Wiliam and Ann on the 1861, but unless she was actually called Sarah Ann or she died and William remarried, I can't find them.
