Jen,
yes I have found both of those entries on the 1881 census and I think that the family at 9 Pensioner row is mine (fingers crossed ) I haven't been able to trace them back further as yet.
The 1901 census for Herbert Mills (RG 13/4323 Page 6) at 31 Highstone road, Worsbrough has Mary Ann listed as the same age as Herbert, if that is correct then she was born Q4 1873 Barnsley 9c 211 which would point to the Pensioner Row family in 1881.
If you can confirm that one way or the other it would be great. Thanks, Ian

Hi Ian,
Got a result for you, and can't believe how it happened. I went to the archives today and looked for the fiche of the parish records for Worsbrough Common as it was Mary Ann's parish, but there were no records for the date , they were all 1920 onwards! The lady at the archives suggested I try the records for a church in town and if not, one at Worsbrough Dale. I checked the latter first, put the fiche in the reader and switched it on. The entry for Herbert and Mary Ann was the one that was positioned under the eye as I pushed the negative into place! Thats never happened before, and it saved scrolling through loads of them. A bit spooky really.
They married at St Thomas's parish church, Worsbrough Dale.
April 5th 1896
Herbert William Mills 22 bachelor he was a glassblower living in Worsbrough Common and his father was William Mills, a miner.
Mary Ann Cullumbine 22 Spinster, living Worsbrough Common Father, James Cullumbine, a miner.
Both signed the register, Herbert had very ornate, swirly writing.
The witnesses were James Henry Hill and James Cullumbine
At least now you can move on with Mary Ann's family.
Ive been to a wedding at that church myself, when my brother married 20 years ago. Let me know if you need anything else checking either at the archives or on ancestry.
Jen

Hi Jen,
Wow, the fiche must have known
Thank you so much for all your efforts, this has opened up a whole area of my tree for me.
Does the Barnsley Archives cover the Wortley & Hemsworth districts? I have another section of my tree where I can't find trace of some individuals recorded in my granddad's research. I have part of the family on the 1881 census and matching Birth indexes.
Perhaps I should start a new thread for them...
Thanks again, Ian
